Black Friday has nearly arrived, meaning Black Friday TV deals on a wide range of sets. Of all the Black Friday deals I’ve seen so far, some of the best have been on Samsung TVs, from premium OLEDs to budget QLEDs and everything in between. Samsung’s TVs are among the best TVs on the market, offering generally excellent picture quality across the board. They’re also well equipped for gaming, with four HDMI 2.1 ports featuring in even budget models. Below, I’ve linked my top five Samsung TV deals in the US and UK, featuring record-low prices and huge savings. Highlights include the 65-inch Samsung S90D hitting a lowest-ever price of $1,397.99 (was $1,797.99) at Amazon US. In the UK, the 55-inch Samsung S95D has hit a ridiculously low £1,489 (was £1,599) at Amazon UK—the cheapest we’ve ever seen for our 2024 TV of the year! But there’s a deal here to suit everyone. Today’s best Samsung TV deals in the US Today’s best Samsung TV deals in the UK In my Samsung S95D review, I described it as “the future of OLED” and called it the “standard bearer for TV in 2024”. The Samsung S95D impressed with its powerful contrast, vibrant colors and impeccable detail, and it introduced OLED Glare Free tech, which essentially eliminates screen reflections. It has a sleek design, great built-in sound and an extensive list of gaming features, and is easily one of the best OLED TVs I’ve ever seen. Sitting below the S95D is the Samsung S90D. While we haven’t had a chance to try out the S90D here at TechRadar, we loved its predecessor, the Samsung S90C (our 2023 TV of the year). On paper, the S90D carries all the same great features as the S90C such as four HDMI 2.1 ports for gaming, and a QD-OLED display panel. Although we haven’t tested it, there are some outstanding offers available that are too good to miss. The Samsung QN90D is simply the best TV for sports, thanks to its bright, mini-LED-backlit display panel and brilliant motion handling, which made any fast-moving images look smooth during my testing. It’s also great for movies and gaming thanks to its contrast-rich, colorful picture and full suite of gaming features including 4K 144Hz and VRR across four HDMI 2.1 ports. The Samsung Q80D has a mid-range price, but premium performance and features. Its QLED panel is seriously effective, delivering stunning contrast and black levels, along with vibrant, bold colors. It’s no slouch for gaming either, with its four HDMI 2.1 ports supporting 4K 120Hz and VRR and cloud gaming options putting it with the best gaming TVs on the market. For a budget option, there’s the Samsung Q60D. During testing, its QLED panel with Dual LED tech delivered a picture with great contrast. As with all Samsung sets I tested in 2024, details and textures were lifelike. While it’s not as well equipped for gaming, it still features Samsung’s Gaming Hub for cloud gaming. Brazilian Flowers Employ Pollen Catapults to Dominate Pollination Battles

Flowers of Hypenia macrantha, a species native to Brazil, have been observed using unique mechanisms to outcompete rivals during pollination. According to research, these blooms utilise a pollen “catapult” system to increase the chances of successful pollination. The strategy involves launching their pollen in a burst to displace rival pollen from the beaks of visiting hummingbirds, enhancing their reproductive success.

Pollination Strategy Observed in Brazilian Flowers

The flowers exhibit both male and female reproductive stages, switching roles to avoid self-pollination. During their male phase, pollen is produced and stored under petal-covered compartments. When a hummingbird probes the flower for nectar, a trigger mechanism is activated, launching the stored pollen forcefully. This process was studied using hummingbird skulls coated with fluorescent particles to simulate natural conditions, as per a ScienceNewsExplores report.

High-speed footage of the experiment demonstrated that the pollen launch effectively removed rival pollen from the simulated beak, replacing it with the flower’s own. Researchers found that beaks lost significantly more pollen when entering flowers still in their male phase compared to those that had already discharged their pollen.

Bruce Anderson, an evolutionary ecologist at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, told Science News that this mechanism appears to allocate pollen for two distinct purposes: reproduction and competitive displacement.

A Mechanism of Floral Competition

Rebecca Burch, an evolutionary biologist at the State University of New York at Oswego, has noted parallels between plant and animal reproductive competition. In comments reported by the research team on the Science News, she highlighted that plants exhibit dynamic behaviours often underestimated in ecological studies.

Scientists Test Mobile Tower-Based GPS Signals That Could Help Pilots in Emergency Situations

Scientists are developing an alternative navigation system that utilises mobile signals to assist pilots if GPS fails, according to a study conducted by Sandia National Laboratories and Ohio State University. The system relies on signals from cell towers and communication satellites, offering a safety net for airborne navigation systems. The initiative aims to mitigate risks associated with GPS failures, which can occur due to technical malfunctions, malicious interference, or in areas of conflict.

Testing and Early Results

The global positioning system, consisting of 31 satellites, is certified by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to provide precise navigation data. However, it remains vulnerable to jamming and hacking, raising concerns about its reliability in critical situations.

The research team, led by Jennifer Sanderson, an electrical engineer at Sandia National Laboratories, said in a statement that to counter these challenges through a technology that employs “signals of opportunity”—unintentional signals like those from mobile networks and satellites.

As reported by Sandia National Laboratories, experimental trials have utilised weather balloons to carry antenna payloads into the stratosphere, achieving altitudes up to 82,000 feet (25,000 metres). These payloads capture signals from communication satellites and cell towers, potentially providing pilots with navigational data during GPS disruptions.

Initial findings suggest that cell tower signal beacons can be detected at such altitudes, though the process currently requires manual analysis to identify individual signals. Researchers plan to enhance the system using algorithms capable of real-time signal identification and positional calculations.

Challenges and Future Developments

While the system shows promise, obstacles remain. Communication satellites focus their signals towards Earth’s surface, making it challenging to detect them effectively at high altitudes. The researchers are working on improving detection capabilities and reducing errors to ensure the technology’s practicality for aviation.

If successfully implemented, this navigation system could significantly bolster aviation safety by providing a reliable backup for GPS, reducing risks associated with its failure during flights.

Indian Ocean Gravity Hole Might Have Been Formed After the Death of an Ancient Ocean

A vast region in the Indian Ocean, known as the “gravity hole,” has intrigued scientists since its discovery in 1948. Located in the Laccadive Sea, southwest of India, this circular area experiences significantly weaker gravitational pull, causing sea levels to drop by an astounding 348 feet compared to surrounding regions. Spanning 1.2 million square miles, the anomaly has long puzzled geophysicists, who recently made progress in uncovering its origins.

Formation Linked to Prehistoric Ocean Tethys

Research published in Geophysical Research Letters in 2023 has traced the gravity hole’s formation to events occurring over 100 million years ago. The ancient ocean Tethys, which existed between the supercontinents Laurasia and Gondwana, played a central role. According to Dr. Attreyee Ghosh, Associate Professor at the Indian Institute of Science and the co-author of the study, fragments of Tethys’ oceanic crust descended into the Earth’s mantle when Gondwana began to split apart 180 million years ago.

As these fragments sank deeper over millions of years, denser materials from the African region of the mantle were displaced. Simulations conducted using 19 computer models suggest that low-density magma plumes rose to replace the denser material, effectively reducing the mass beneath the Indian Ocean and creating the geoid low.

Verification of Findings Pending

While the study offers a compelling explanation, additional evidence is required to confirm the findings. Earthquake data is being considered to verify the presence of low-density plumes beneath the region. Scientists like Dr. Ghosh acknowledge the complexity of Earth’s mantle dynamics, as similar anomalies have been observed globally, revealing the intricate processes within the planet’s interior.

The discovery highlights the broader significance of studying subsurface phenomena for Earth and other planets. Similar mantle structures have been observed beneath Mars, underscoring the universal nature of geological processes shaping planetary bodies. One of the most intense cosmic shockwaves has been observed in Stephan’s Quintet, a group of galaxies located approximately 290 million light-years from Earth. The event was triggered by the galaxy NGC 7318b colliding with four neighbouring galaxies at an estimated velocity of two million mph (3.2 million kmph). The collision produced a shock front likened by researchers to the sonic boom of a jet fighter. These findings, which could illuminate the complex processes shaping galaxies, have been published in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

The leaked renders suggest that the 2025 version of the handset will likely get a square rear camera module, with three sensors and a circular LED flash unit.

The display of the Moto G 5G (2025) appears to be flat with slim bezels, a slightly thicker chin, and a centred hole-punch slot at the top. The volume rocker and power button appear on the right edge, while the 3.5mm audio jack, a USB Type-C port and a speaker grille are placed on the bottom edge.

As per the report, the Moto G 5G (2025) is expected to carry a 6.6-inch screen, similar to the existing Moto G 5G (2024). The purported smartphone is said to measure 167.2 x 76.4 x 8.17mm in size. The handset could measure 9.6mm in thickness including the camera bump. More details about the rumoured smartphone could surface online over the next few days.

The Moto G 5G (2025) comes with a 6.6-inch 120Hz HD+ LCD screen, a Snapdragon 4 Gen 1 SoC, and a 5,000mAh battery with 18W TurboPower charging support. The U7N is arguably the better value for money as it has better local dimming performance and more gaming features. It has a mini-LED backlight, a solid list of gaming features including VRR, Dolby Vision gaming, and ALLM, and supports both the Dolby Vision and HDR10+ high dynamic range formats. It also has an effective game mode and uses Google TV as its US smart TV platform and Hisense’s VIDAA interface in the UK. So what does the extra cost of the Hisense U7N get you? For starters, more local dimming zones for better contrast (342 zones vs the U6N’s 240 in the 65-inch model I tested) and 4K 144Hz support for gaming. Both sets also support the Dolby Atmos and DTS:X audio formats, though the U7N’s 2.1-channel, 40W built-in speakers give an overall punchier sound than the U6N’s 2.0-channel, 10W speakers. The Hisense U7N wins this round not just because it has more features, but because you get those extra features for only a minimal price increase. Blacks did take on a grayish tone, but dimmer movies such as The Batman still looked pretty good. But, it was the U6N’s detail and textures that impressed me the most. It didn’t have the same near-3D realism as Samsung TVs such as the Samsung QN90D, but the U6N’s picture was still refined and showed good depth. So, what differences are there between the U6N and U7N? The U7N’s higher local dimming zone count improved contrast further, delivering deeper black levels and improved shadow detail, which made objects more visible in dark scenes. The U7N’s colors were also brighter and more vivid. While neither TV’s brightness is going to blow away more premium mini-LEDs such as the TCL QM851G or step-up Hisense U8N, I measured the U6N and U7N’s peak brightness as 651 nits and 1,074 nits respectively. The higher brightness on the U7N was noticeable, giving HDR highlights a more dynamic look. I also found that both the U6N and U7N struggled with motion. Neither TV is going to top the best TVs for sport, but the U7N in its Standard or Smooth motion preset did require less tweaking of settings compared to the U6N. Both of these affordable mini-LED TVs demonstrated some backlight blooming, and contrast faded when viewed off-center. But, once again, the U7N didn’t suffer as badly here as the U6N. The U7N takes the crown and shows that budget mini-LEDs can still demonstrate great picture quality. It’s easily the best affordable mini-LED TV with a picture that outperforms its price. Winner: Hisense U7N Hisense U6N vs Hisense U7N: Sound quality Hisense U7N (Image credit: Future) Straight off the bat, I’d recommend pairing both the Hisense U6N and Hisense U7N with one of the best soundbars, as their limited speaker arrays and limited overall power aren’t going to give you the most cinematic experience. Nevertheless, if you really don’t want to use a soundbar, I found during testing that the U6N demonstrated clear enough speech, though it struggled in other areas due to its limited soundstage and average sound placement. The Hisense U7N didn’t fare much better in my tests, but its subwoofer helped make the bass sound punchier. I also found its directional sound placement to be more accurate. Again, I’d recommend using a soundbar with both of these sets, but when it comes to built-in sound, the Hisense U7N just comes out on top. Each comes with an easy to assemble stand and has a trim enough bezel and profile, but their physical design is what you’d expect from a TV in this price range. The built-in smart TV platform will vary depending on your location. In the US and Australia, the U6N and U7N use Google TV as their smart interface, whereas in the UK, both use Hisense’s own VIDAA platform. Google TV is my preferred interface of the two as it feels more responsive and has a tidier home screen, but both offer a good number of picture and sound settings to tailor the experience to your needs. However, the Hisense U7N offers all of this plus 4K144Hz support – a feature we look for in the best gaming TVs that will let you get the most out of PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles, as well as PC gaming. I found during testing that performance when playing Battlefield V was good on both the U6N at 60Hz and U7N at 120Hz, and both are sure to make gamers happy., Both TVs did a great job graphically as well. The U7N’s gaming features make it more future-proof than the U6N and its picture and performance are better overall. If you’re a gamer, the U7N is the better choice. Winner: Hisense U7N Hisense U6N vs Hisense U7N: Value The Hisense U6N and Hisense U7N are both excellent value for money. Both deliver a high-quality picture for less than you’ll find elsewhere, and they also come with a good list of gaming features. The 65-inch model of the U6N costs around $499 / £699 / AU$1,295 and prices for the 65-inch U7N are around $699 / £899 / AU$1,395 at the time of writing. To give some context, compared to the Amazon Omni QLED ($599 / £899), another budget TV, both Hisense models have similar or better features and better picture quality. Of the two, the Hisense U7N demonstrates the better value, thanks to its superior overall picture quality and features. It has a stronger picture with better contrast, detail, and color. It also supports high frame rates for gaming and has a good range of smart features. If you can’t stretch your budget, the Hisense U6N is still very good and delivers plenty of bang for your buck, but the U7N is the better TV and the better value of the two.
