World Labs Unveils AI System That Can Generate 3D Interactive Worlds Using an Image

World Labs, the artificial intelligence (AI) startup, unveiled its first AI system on Monday. The currently unnamed AI system can generate interactive 3D worlds using an image input. These generated worlds turn the 2D visual asset into explorable 3D scenes where users can navigate using a keyboard and mouse. The AI system is currently in preview and has not been made public. However, the startup, which was founded by the computer scientist Fei-Fei Li, stated that it is working to release the full version soon.

World Labs Unveils AI System Capable of Generating 3D Worlds

In a blog post, the San Francisco-based startup showcased the capabilities of its AI model. World Labs highlighted that most generative AI tools today can create 2D content such as images or videos. Although some AI firms do generate 3D models from 2D images or text prompts, the scope is pretty limited. In recent times, only Google DeepMind has unveiled an AI model that generates unique 2D video game levels.

However, based on the interactive assets shared by the startup, the unnamed AI system’s capabilities surpass the generative capabilities seen so far. Put short, the company claims users can add any image that depicts a scene as input, and the AI model can generate a 3D interactive version of the scene. This means users can move forward, backwards, and side-to-side and explore the generated area.

The AI model does not only generate three-dimensional renders of the objects in the image, it also creates unseen details such as new alleyways, ceiling art, new objects and more from scratch. World Labs claim that apart from the initial image, everything is generated by the AI system.

Additionally, the generated scenes can also be modified. Users can change camera angles, depth, and zoom as well as add 3D effects to the background as well as the objects in the foreground.

World Labs’ AI system can also be integrated with other AI tools. The startup said this will allow creators to first generate the starting image using a familiar text-to-image generator such as Ideogram, Dall-E, or Midjourney and then create a 3D world using the startup’s tool. The AI firm is currently working with a few creators to test the AI system’s capabilities and its 3D-native generative AI workflow.

As of now, the AI system is not available in the public domain, and the startup highlighted that it is still working on it to improve the size and the fidelity of the generated worlds. However, interested individuals can join the company’s waitlist to be informed when the AI system is released.

Can We Defend Earth from Asteroids? Here’s What You Need to Know

Efforts to shield Earth from asteroid impacts have advanced, but significant gaps remain in planetary defence systems. Robin George Andrews’ book How to Kill an Asteroid delves into the complexities of safeguarding the planet from potentially catastrophic asteroid collisions, as per a report. According to the book, the key strategy involves deflecting asteroids from their trajectories rather than destroying them, an approach tested by NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) in 2022. This mission marked a major milestone in space defence, successfully altering the orbit of the asteroid moonlet Dimorphos.

NASA’s DART Mission and Its Implications

As per a report by ScienceNews, NASA’s DART spacecraft demonstrated the feasibility of redirecting a non-threatening asteroid during its mission. As reported, the spacecraft collided with Dimorphos on September 26, 2022, changing its orbital path. This first-of-its-kind success showcased a viable strategy to prevent future impacts, as noted in the mission’s post-analysis. However, experts caution that DART represents the only proven method, highlighting the need for further advancements.

Gaps in Planetary Defence Systems

Planetary defence faces substantial challenges, particularly in detection capabilities. Sources indicate that the proposed Near-Earth Object Surveyor (NEO Surveyor), designed to enhance asteroid detection, has faced delays due to budgetary cuts. The loss of key observational tools, such as the Arecibo Observatory, has also hindered monitoring efforts. These setbacks, as highlighted by researchers, underscore the urgent need for investment in detection technologies.

Global and Social Ramifications

Addressing asteroid threats extends beyond scientific and technological measures. Experts have raised concerns about potential geopolitical and societal disruptions following asteroid warnings. Scenarios such as misinformation, economic instability, and political tensions have been cited as potential consequences, adding complexity to planetary defence planning.

While challenges remain, Andrews’ book underscores the necessity for global cooperation and reinvestment in asteroid preparedness to prevent future catastrophes. Scientists and policymakers continue to advocate for expanded efforts, ensuring readiness to counter celestial threats.

James Webb Space Telescope Reveals Surprising Details of Westerlund 1 Star Cluster

Using advanced infrared imaging, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) has captured unprecedented details of the supermassive star cluster Westerlund 1, located around 12,000 light-years from Earth. The findings, released by the Extended Westerlund 1 and 2 Open Clusters Survey (EWOCS), provide critical insights into the cluster’s stellar composition and formation processes. Spanning over 6.6 light-years with a mass equivalent to 63,000 suns, Westerlund 1 is the closest supermassive star cluster to Earth and hosts hundreds of massive stars in a dense configuration.

Unique Stellar Features Identified

Mario Giuseppe, team leader at the Palermo Astronomical Observatory, told Space.com that observations were extended to detect brown dwarfs—stars at the lowest end of the mass spectrum. Giuseppe reportedly highlighted the potential to analyse the mass distribution and star formation mechanisms within the cluster. This work is expected to refine the understanding of starburst environments and their influence on planetary development.

JWST’s instruments, the Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI) and the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam), provided deep imaging capabilities, revealing intricate gas and dust structures surrounding Westerlund 1. This material, believed to result from massive stars’ final evolutionary stages, challenges prior assumptions that young clusters expel such remnants within a million years.

Wider Collaborative Research Efforts

EWOCS has utilised data from other observatories, including the Hubble Space Telescope, ALMA, and NASA’s Chandra X-ray Space Telescope, to complement the JWST findings, as per several reports. Studies on Westerlund 1’s intracluster material and high-energy phenomena, including binary systems and evolved stars, are anticipated in the next few years.

The research, which also involves analysing the slightly younger Westerlund 2 cluster, is expected to shed light on star and planet formation under extreme conditions. These findings have been published in Astronomy & Astrophysics and are available as a preprint on arXiv.

OpenAI Sued by Canadian News Companies Over Alleged Copyright Breaches

Five Canadian news media companies filed a legal action on Friday against ChatGPT owner OpenAI, accusing the artificial-intelligence company of regularly breaching copyright and online terms of use.

The case is part of a wave of lawsuits against OpenAI and other tech companies by authors, visual artists, music publishers and other copyright owners over data used to train generative AI systems. Microsoft is OpenAI’s major backer.

In a statement, Torstar, Postmedia, The Globe and Mail, The Canadian Press, and CBC/Radio-Canada said OpenAI was scraping large swaths of content to develop its products without getting permission or compensating content owners.

“Journalism is in the public interest. OpenAI using other companies’ journalism for their own commercial gain is not. It’s illegal,” they said.

A New York federal judge dismissed a lawsuit on Nov. 7 against OpenAI that claimed it misused articles from news outlets Raw Story and AlterNet.

In an 84-page statement of claim filed in Ontario’s superior court of justice, the five Canadian companies demanded damages from OpenAI and a permanent injunction preventing it from using their material without consent.

“Rather than seek to obtain the information legally, OpenAI has elected to brazenly misappropriate the News Media Companies’ valuable intellectual property and convert it for its own uses, including commercial uses, without consent or consideration,” they said in the filing.

“The News Media Companies have never received from OpenAI any form of consideration, including payment, in exchange for OpenAI’s use of their Works.”

In response, OpenAI said its models were trained on publicly available data, grounded in fair use and related international copyright principles that were fair for creators.

“We collaborate closely with news publishers, including in the display, attribution and links to their content in ChatGPT search, and offer them easy ways to opt out should they so desire,” a spokesperson said via email.

The Canadian news companies’ document did not mention Microsoft. This month, billionaire Elon Musk expanded a lawsuit against OpenAI to include Microsoft, alleging the two companies illegally sought to monopolize the market for generative AI and sideline competitors.

Massive 97-inch TVs have never been more popular – here’s why

The market for TVs over 97-inches has grown by nearly 900% Slightly more modest TVs are selling well in 2024 too The growth is driven by plummeting prices and post-pandemic upgrades The market for huge TVs over 97 inches in size has grown bigger than the bill for our Black Friday impulse buys. It’s increased by a whopping 877% in just one year, according to a new report, compared to a slightly less stratospheric 19% for TVs larger than 75 inches. The eye-opening stats from market research firm Cicana, reported by CNN, confirm that there’s one key reason for the rocket-powered growth: big TVs are finally getting much cheaper. As the report states, those big TVs are 53% cheaper than they were this time last year. Hence the fast growth: the slower growth of the 75-to-96-inch market is likely due to much smaller price drops of a relatively titchy 6%. In other words, people who previously wanted a really big TV couldn’t afford them. And now, increasingly, they can – but the market isn’t getting more affordable across the board. Why are big TVs getting cheaper? LG showed off a 97-inch OLED TV (the 97G2, above) in 2022, but the growth in TVs of that size has been largely generated by VA LCD panels. (Image credit: LG) As ever with the TV market, some tech is cheaper than other tech. In big TVs, that tech is LCD: most of the names in big TVs offer models with relatively affordable VA LCD panels, which have come down in price even at the very largest sizes. Price drops have been slower with more complex tech, which is why the very largest OLED TVs and micro-LED TVs are still much more expensive than their VA LCD siblings. That’s likely to remain the case for a while yet. There’s another reason for the market growth: Cicada reckons that many people are buying big TVs to replace the TVs they bought during the Covid pandemic. Sign up to be the first to know about unmissable Black Friday deals on top tech, plus get all your favorite TechRadar content. According to vice-president of consumer tech at Circana, Paul Gagnon, “The strong growth trend for ultra-large TVs aligns with the increase in 65-inch TV sales from 2018 to 2020, which consumers are now starting to replace five to six years later, in line with what our research suggests is the most common replacement interval.” That’s a trend the firm expects to see continuing into 2025 and beyond. Put another way, your long-held wish to buy a truly enormous TV has been officially granted. You might also like

ERP vs CRM: Understanding the Key Differences

Customer relationship management (CRM) and enterprise resource planning (ERP) have a fair amount of similarities but they do possess some key differences. Both CRM and ERP are software solutions that, when applied correctly, assist businesses of all sizes with centralizing customer data, increasing work productivity, and improving automation processes in order to drive revenue growth.

However, where these two software platforms differ is that CRM often supports sales and customer service operations, while ERP supports financial operations and accounting. When it comes to automation features, a CRM system automates customer interactions and sales processes, whereas an ERP system automates fiscal operations and business practices.

What is CRM?

CRM is a robust software tool that can be integrated into your business to boost productivity and enhance communication and collaboration among your team members. The main goal of any CRM system is to improve customer interactions, which leads to stronger relationships between your business and its clientele, and translates into higher profitability through lead conversion.

Managers and teams accomplish this goal and more by relying on a centralized hub that stores all customer data, which can then be easily accessed by team members. This is particularly useful if multiple team members are working on the same account and need to collaborate in lockstep, making it easier for them to understand the individual wants and needs of their customer base, while taking the appropriate actions needed to move forward.

A CRM system allows your sales and marketing teams to stay organized, identify prospective leads, and by utilizing advances in automation practices, convert those leads into paying customers. Ultimately, a CRM system assists with maintaining and nurturing relationships with existing clientele in an effort to keep their interest from waning; while also increasing customer retention, reducing churn, and prioritizing new customers when necessary.

What are the benefits of CRM?

There are many benefits that come with adopting CRM software for your business, with improved customer interactions being at the top of the list. Since a CRM system works by storing important customer data in a singular hub, that information can be easily accessed by anyone on your team with just a click. Every interaction between your team members and customers is logged and provides important insights that can be recalled and leveraged to build loyalty and boost customer satisfaction.

A CRM can also significantly improve customer service through automation. Customer support can be automated to track patterns in customer behavior, which will assist your team with identifying and addressing certain issues before they become problematic. When using a CRM to improve customer service, it is also much more likely to increase customer retention and reduce churn.

When customers continue to return to your business, you can expect to see a definite increase in sales. And because a CRM directly assists with building your sales pipeline, streamlining sales processes and automating important tasks, team members are much more likely to focus on their most profitable customers, which leads to a noticeable increase in overall sales revenue.

What is ERP?

ERP is a software solution that manages and organizes a company’s daily business activities, such as accounting, project management and risk management. An ERP system also ensures that supply chain operations function optimally and continue to provide flexibility when updates need to be made. A robust ERP platform should possess several important features, including an enterprise performance management function, which assists with planning and budgeting a business’s financial results.

ERP systems connect various business processes and allow data to flow smoothly between them. By gathering shared data from different sources, ERP reduces data duplication and ensures improved accuracy, which creates a single reliable source of information. In today’s business landscape, ERP systems are essential for managing businesses of all sizes across many different industries.

What are the benefits of ERP?

ERP systems offer several key benefits for businesses. For example, an ERP system centralizes data across all departments, ensuring that everyone has access to accurate and up-to-date information. This not only improves decision-making and ensures a reduction in errors, but it also promotes better collaboration between team members. With all functions integrated, companies can streamline their processes, automate repetitive tasks, and eliminate inefficiencies, which ultimately saves time and reduces operational costs.

Another benefit of ERP is its ability to improve reporting and analytics. ERP systems provide real-time insights into business performance, helping managers monitor their financials, and forecast future trends. This data-driven approach allows for smarter decision-making and better strategic planning.

Finally, as ERP systems are scalable, they can grow with a business. This flexibility makes it easier for companies to adapt, expand into new markets, and incorporate new technologies, ensuring the system remains useful as the company continues to evolve.

What is the difference between CRM and ERP?

CRM and ERP are both critical systems for businesses but serve distinct purposes. CRM is designed to manage customer relationships, focusing on improving customer satisfaction, retention, and sales. It centralizes customer data and automates sales and marketing processes, which makes it easier to nurture leads and build lasting customer connections. CRM is mostly used by sales, marketing, and customer service teams to optimize customer engagement and boost sales revenue.

On the other hand, ERP is a comprehensive system that integrates essential functions such as finance, inventory, human resources (HR), and production. ERP’s primary goal is to streamline workflows and ensure efficient resource use across departments. By centralizing data from different functions, ERP provides a unified view of business operations, enabling better decision-making and coordination between teams.

While CRM focuses on improving customer relations and driving sales, ERP focuses on optimizing the company’s internal processes. Businesses often integrate both systems to create a cohesive operation, where customer-focused efforts are supported by efficient resource and data management across the entire organization.

Key features of ERP and CRM

ERP systems centralize and streamline a business’s core operational functions, including finance, inventory, HR, and supply chain management (SCM). ERP systems improve efficiency and visibility across all departments, making it easier for teams to collaborate, track performance, and make informed decisions.

Key ERP features include:

  • Real-time data sharing across departments.
  • Automated workflows.
  • Advanced reporting tools that help with budgeting, forecasting, and resource allocation.

CRM systems focus on managing customer interactions, helping businesses build stronger customer relationships, and drive sales. CRM systems provide insights into customer behavior and buying patterns, enabling sales and support teams to offer a more tailored and responsive customer experience.

Key CRM features include:

  • Contact management.
  • Lead tracking.
  • Sales forecasting.
  • Customer segmentation.
  • Tools for automating follow-ups and creating personalized marketing.

How to choose the right tool for your business

To choose the right CRM vs ERP tools, start by understanding your business’s needs, goals, and budget. For a CRM, consider your team size, customer interaction complexity, and required features like lead tracking and automated follow-ups. You should also make sure the CRM system is user-friendly and can grow with your customer base.

For ERP, choose a solution that fits your industry and integrates well with your current system tools. Make sure it supports essential functions like finance, inventory, and HR, and check for strong reporting, data security, and customization options. Consider looking for flexible solutions and always review the support and training provided by the ERP system to guarantee its smooth implementation.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What is the key difference between CRM and SCM?

Customer relationship management (CRM) focuses on managing a company’s interactions with customers to boost satisfaction, loyalty, and sales. A supply chain management (SCM) system optimizes the flow of goods, services, and information from suppliers to end customers, and aims for efficiency and timely delivery.

Can you use ERP for CRM?

An enterprise resource planning (ERP) system can be used for customer relationship management (CRM) purposes, as many ERP solutions include CRM modules. These modules allow businesses to manage customer data, track interactions, and improve sales processes, although dedicated CRM systems often offer more advanced customer-focused features.

What are the benefits of an ERP?

There are a host of benefits that come with adopting an enterprise resource planning (ERP) system for your business. An ERP system centralizes data across departments, which improves communication, efficiency, and decision-making.
