Android’s New Feature Will Automatically Log Users Back Into Apps When Switching Devices

Google has announced a new feature for Android which aims to make the process of switching to and setting up new devices a quicker and more efficient experience. The feature, called Restore Credentials, can automatically log users back into apps on devices once the switchover is complete, leveraging a restore key. It has been introduced as part of Android’s Credential Manager API and works with both cloud and local restore options on Android devices.

Google detailed its new Restore Credentials feature in a blog post. The Mountain View-based technology giant highlighted that it is tied to the backup and restore mechanism of the Android system. Even when signed in on the new device, users will continue to be able to access all of their apps and receive notifications on their old devices as well.

It uses a public key which is compatible with passkey and FIDO2 backends and makes use of the passkey server-side infrastructure. As per the company, users will be silently logged in after data restoration is complete if there is a backup agent integration. In case there is none, the app will carry out a search for the restore key upon the first launch and then automatically sign the user in.

The developer can create a restore key for the user which is saved locally. It can also get saved in the cloud if the user backs up their device and end-to-end encryption is available. Once the data restore process is commenced, the app data, along with the restore key is also copied over to the new device, either through the cloud or local transfer. It then automatically signs in the user on the new device. Google says this entire process does not require any user input.

Google advises developers to delete the restore key as soon as the user signs out to avoid the cycle of signing out intentionally and automatically getting logged back in. They can create, obtain, and clear restore credentials using the Jetpack Credential Manager.

High-speed footage of the experiment demonstrated that the pollen launch effectively removed rival pollen from the simulated beak, replacing it with the flower’s own. Researchers found that beaks lost significantly more pollen when entering flowers still in their male phase compared to those that had already discharged their pollen.

Bruce Anderson, an evolutionary ecologist at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, told Science News that this mechanism appears to allocate pollen for two distinct purposes: reproduction and competitive displacement.

Rebecca Burch, an evolutionary biologist at the State University of New York at Oswego, has noted parallels between plant and animal reproductive competition. Scientists are developing an alternative navigation system that utilises mobile signals to assist pilots if GPS fails, according to a study conducted by Sandia National Laboratories and Ohio State University. The system relies on signals from cell towers and communication satellites, offering a safety net for airborne navigation systems. The initiative aims to mitigate risks associated with GPS failures, which can occur due to technical malfunctions, malicious interference, or in areas of conflict.

Testing and Early Results

The global positioning system, consisting of 31 satellites, is certified by the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to provide precise navigation data. However, it remains vulnerable to jamming and hacking, raising concerns about its reliability in critical situations.

The research team, led by Jennifer Sanderson, an electrical engineer at Sandia National Laboratories, said in a statement that to counter these challenges through a technology that employs “signals of opportunity”—unintentional signals like those from mobile networks and satellites.

With the new Default Apps section inside the settings app, Apple has introduced at least eight new categories for default apps.

 After updating to iOS 18.2, users will be able to choose a default email, browser, calling, and messaging app, allowing users to switch away from Apple’s Mail, Safari, Phone, and Messaging apps, respectively. Similarly, they will also be able to select a default call filtering app from the new Default Apps section.

Users will also reportedly see two Default App sections that allow more than one app to be selected — Contactless App and Passwords & Codes. These can be useful if a user wants to use more than one payment app or switch between more than one keyboard on their iPhone.

According to the publication, these eight Default Apps sections will be shown to users in the US, while those in other regions might see a different number of sections. iPhone users in the European Union (EU), which has more stringent anticompetition rules, might see additional options that allow them to set default apps in more categories, but there’s no clarity on those at present.
