Social Media Users Lack Control Over Data Used by AI, US FTC Says

Social
media

companies
collect,
share
and
process
vast
troves
of
information
about
their
users
while
offering
little
transparency
or
control,
including
over
how
it
is
used
by
systems
incorporating
artificial
intelligence,
the

US
Federal
Trade
Commission

said
in
a
report
released
on
Thursday.

The
report
analyzed
how

Meta

Platforms,
ByteDance’s

TikTok
,
Amazon’s
gaming
platform
Twitch,
and
others
manage
user
data,
concluding
that
data
management
and
retention
policies
at
many
of
the
companies
were
“woefully
inadequate.”

YouTube,
social
media
platform

X
,
Snap,
Discord
and

Reddit

were
also
included
in
the
FTC
report,
though
its
findings
were
anonymized
and
did
not
reveal
specific
companies’
practices.
YouTube
is
owned
by
Alphabet’s
Google.

Discord,
a
communications
platform,
said
the
report
lumps
very
different
business
models
into
one
category,
and
that
it
did
not
offer
advertising
at
the
time
the
study
was
conducted.

An
X
spokesperson
said
the
report
is
based
on
practices
from
2020
when
the
site
was
known
as
Twitter,
which
X
has
since
improved.

“X
takes
user
data
privacy
seriously
and
ensures
users
are
aware
of
the
data
they
are
sharing
with
the
platform
and
how
it
is
being
used,
while
providing
them
with
the
option
of
limiting
the
data
that
is
collected
from
their
accounts,”
the
spokesperson
said.

Only
about
1
percent
of
X’s
current
U.S.
users
are
between
ages
13
and
17,
the
spokesperson
said.

Other
companies
did
not
immediately
reply
to
requests
for
comment.

Social
media
companies
gather
data
through
tracking
technologies
used
in
online
advertising
and
buying
information
from
data
brokers,
and
other
means,
the
FTC
said.

“While
lucrative
for
the
companies,
these
surveillance
practices
can
endanger
people’s
privacy,
threaten
their
freedoms,
and
expose
them
to
a
host
of
harms,
from
identity
theft
to
stalking,”
said
FTC
Chair
Lina
Khan.

Data
privacy,
particularly
for
kids
and
teens,
has
been
a
hot-button
issue.
The
US
House
of
Representatives
is
considering
bills
passed
by
the
Senate
in
July
aimed
at
addressing
social
media’s
effects
on
younger
users.
And
Meta
recently
rolled
out
teen
accounts
that
incorporate
enhanced
parental
controls.

Meanwhile,
Big
Tech
companies
have
been
scrambling
to
acquire
sources
of
data
to
train
their
emerging
artificial-intelligence
technologies.
The
data
deals
are
infrequently
disclosed
and
often
involve
private
content
locked
behind
paywalls
and
login
screens,
with
scant
or
no
notice
to
the
users
who
posted
it.

In
addition
to
collecting
data
about
how
users
engage
with
their
services,
most
of
the
companies
the
FTC
reviewed
collected
users’
age
and
gender
or
guessed
it
based
on
other
information.
Some
also
gathered
information
on
users’
income,
education
and
family
status,
the
FTC
said.

Companies
gathered
data
on
individuals
who
did
not
use
their
services,
and
some
were
not
able
to
identify
all
of
the
ways
they
collected
and
used
data,
the
FTC
said.

Advertising
industry
groups
criticised
the
report
on
Thursday,
saying
that
consumers
recognize
the
value
of
ad-supported
services.

“We
are
disappointed
with
the
FTC’s
continued
characterization
of
the
digital
advertising
industry
as
engaged
in
‘mass
commercial
surveillance,'”
said
David
Cohen,
chief
executive
of
the
Interactive
Advertising
Bureau,
an
advertising
and
marketing
group
which
counts
Snapchat,
TikTok
and
Amazon
among
its
members.

iPhone 16 Series Reportedly Easier to Repair Than Previous Generations Due to Three Key Changes

iPhone
16

series
might
be
easier
to
repair
compared
to
the
previous
generation
of
Apple
smartphones,
according
to
a
report.
The
Cupertino-based
tech
giant
launched
the
series
comprising
the
base
model,
the
iPhone
16
Plus,

iPhone
16
Pro
,
and
iPhone
16
Pro
Max
at
the
“It’s
Glowtime”
event
earlier
this
month.
While
the
company
mentioned
the
new
hardware
upgrades,
it
did
not
highlight
the
behind-the-scenes
changes
it
implemented
to
make
the
devices
easier
to
repair.
However,
there
are
three
ways
Apple
has
made
the
iPhone
16
series
the
easiest
to
repair
in
the
company’s
history.

iPhone
16
Series
Might
Be
Easier
to
Repair

There
are
several
reasons
why
repairing
an

iPhone

from
third-party
repair
shops
or
at
home
was
unfeasible
earlier.
The
company
had
a
strict
policy
when
it
came
to
part
replacement,
making
it
necessary
to
order
them
directly
from
Apple.
Further,
the
battery
was
stuck
to
the
enclosure
using
an
adhesive
which
was
very
difficult
to
remove.

However,
an
Engadget

report

claims
the
adhesive
issue
now
does
not
exist
as
the
tech
giant
has
changed
its
adhesive
design
to
use
a
material
that
comes
off
when
a
low
voltage
electrical
current
is
run
through
it.
Repair
professionals
can
bring
the
battery
out
of
the
enclosure
by
just
using
a
9V
battery
(common
batteries
available
at
retailers
and
used
for
various
appliances).

Another
improvement
is
reportedly
coming
to
the
iPhone
16
series’
Light
Detection
and
Ranging
(LiDAR)
scanner,
which
is
used
for
the
FaceID.
It
was
previously
not
possible
to
repair
outside
of
Apple
service
centres
due
to
the
security
concerns
associated
with
manipulating
the
system.
But
now,
the
new
TrueDepth
camera
can
reportedly
be
swapped
from
one
unit
to
another
without
any
issues.

The
third
change
is
also
significant.
Apple
has
introduced
the
Repair
Assistant
with

iOS
18
,
which
solves
part
pairing
issues.
As
mentioned
above,
part
pairing
was
difficult
because
of
Apple’s
strict
policy.
However,
the
company
is
now
allowing
users
to
configure
and
calibrate
new
and
used
parts
directly
on
the
device.

Together,
these
changes
now
might
make
it
easier
for
experienced
users
to
fix
minor
issues
and
replace
parts
at
home,
while
others
can
get
them
fixed
at
a
third-party
store.

WhatsApp for Android Could Soon Let Users Pick Default Chat Theme From Multiple Design Styles

WhatsApp

for
Android
may
be
working
on
a
new
feature
that
lets
users
make
default
theme
picks
for
chats
and
chat
bubbles
from
a
multitude
of
design
styles,
according
to
claims
by
a
feature
tracker.
The
purported
feature
is
said
to
provide
users
with
multiple
design
options
via
a
new
user
interface
(UI),
potentially
expanding
the
customisation
choices
on
the
instant
messaging
platform.
This
development
comes
amidst

reports

of
another
in-development
WhatsApp
which
may
let
users
mention
others
in
status
updates.

More

on
WhatsApp
for
Android

According

to
the
WhatsApp
feature
tracker
WABetaInfo,
the
messaging
client
is
developing
this
feature
for
release
on
a
future
version
of
the
app.
It
was
spotted
on
the
WhatsApp
beta
for
Android
version
2.24.20.12.
Following
its
rollout,
users
may
be
able
to
pick
and
choose
their
favourite
options
from
multiple
design
styles.

As
visible
in
the
screenshot
(above),
the
colours
of
the
chat

and
wallpapers
will
automatically
adjust
to
complement
the
selected

The
feature
tracker
claims
users
may
also
have
the
option
to
pick
a
colour
for
the
wallpaper
independent
of
the
chat
bubble,
allowing
them
to
further
fine-tune
the
customisation.

The
option
to
pick
from
multiple
themes
is
said
to
be
present
in
the
settings
on
WhatsApp
for
Android.
It
is
tipped
to
be
applied
to
all
conversations
as
default,
although
users
may
still
have
a
choice
of
manually
overriding
it
for
a
particular
chat.

Notably,
the
ability
to
pick
a
default
theme
was
first
spotted
by
the
feature
tracker
on
WhatsApp
Beta
for
Android
2.24.17.19.

WABetaInfo
claims
that
the
new
ability
to
pick
default
theme
from
options
is
still
in
development
and
is
not
available
to
even
beta
testers
registered
via
the
Google
Play
Beta
program.
However,
it
is
crucial
to
note
that
while
the
instant
messaging
platform
might
be
working
on
several
new
features
for
various
platforms,
not
all
of
them
make
it
to
the
public
release.
