Asus Gaming V16 Review: Strong Battery, Mid-Range Performance

Asus Gaming V16 is part of a new lineup from the Taiwanese manufacturer made for those who want a decent gaming laptop on a budget. The Gaming V16 features a slim and understated design. The laptop weighs under 2kg, making it portable enough to take around in your backpack. It is equipped with the latest Intel Core CPU and a discrete Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 GPU that is powerful enough to run most games.

The laptop has a starting price of Rs. 82,990 for the base variant, which gets the Intel Core 5 210H CPU. Meanwhile, the Intel Core 7 240H processor variant is priced at Rs. 92,990. Both variants get 16GB RAM, 512GB storage, and Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 laptop GPU with 6GB video RAM. Is the Asus Gaming V16 a good option for budget gamers? Read on to find out.

Asus Gaming V16 Design: Simple

  • Dimensions – 35.70 x 25.07 x 1.80 ~ 2.20 cm
  • Weight – 1.95kg
  • Colours – Black

Asus has kept the design of the Gaming V16 very simple. There aren’t any RGB lights or fancy logos suggesting that it’s a gaming laptop. The lid has a matte finish, is prone to fingerprints, and features an Asus logo.

asus gaming v16 review1 AsusGamingV16 Asus

The bottom houses dual speakers

Owing to the plastic build, you’ll find that the lid and the bottom cover flex a bit, but everything is assured to be durable. According to Asus, the laptop even meets the MIL-STD 810H military standards and has passed several tests. The hinge also feels like it won’t give up on you and lets you open the lid with one hand.

asus gaming v16 review2 AsusGamingV16 Asus

There’s a single USB Type-A 3.2 port on the right side

You’ll find a textured finish on the sides and bottom of the laptop, which keeps the fingerprints away. The bottom also houses the dual speakers, large rubber feet, and cutouts for the fan.

asus gaming v16 review3 AsusGamingV16 Asus

The left houses most of the ports

As for connectivity, the Gaming V16 offers an HDMI 2.1 port, a USB Type-A 3.2 port, a USB Type-C 3.2, and a 3.5mm audio jack on the left side, along with a proprietary power connector. The right side of the laptop features another USB Type-A 3.2 port.

asus gaming v16 review4 AsusGamingV16 Asus

The laptop features large exhaust ports at the back

The laptop doesn’t get a LAN port, which is something gamers may find discouraging.

Asus Gaming V16 Display: Good enough

  • Size and type – 16-inch FHD+ IPS panel
  • Refresh rate – 144Hz
  • Brightness – 300 nits

The 16-inch IPS display on the laptop offers a 16:10 aspect ratio with a 1920 x 1200p resolution. The display has an anti-glare coating and a screen-to-body ratio of 89 percent. It also offers a 144Hz refresh rate, which is excellent when gaming. The 16:10 aspect ratio is also good when working or browsing the web.

asus gaming v16 review9 AsusGamingV16 Asus

The display gets an anti-glare coating

Brightness is alright indoors, but I’d recommend not using the laptop outdoors as the 300 nits is barely enough. The display also features muted colours, and while that’s okay for watching content and playing games, it’s not great for video or photo editing. You can improve colour reproduction slightly by choosing a different profile, which is available in the MyAsus software.

Asus Gaming V16 Keyboard, Touchpad, speakers, and webcam

  • Keyboard – Full-size keyboard with Numpad, Single colour backlight
  • Touchpad – Large size, multi-touch with smart gesture support
  • Speakers – Dual drivers with Dirac tuning
  • Webcam – 1080p FHD with privacy shutter

Asus equips the Gaming V16 with a full-sized keyboard, complete with a numeric keypad and a full-function row. The keyboard features what Asus calls a “Turbo Blue” backlight, which is both adjustable and sufficiently bright for nighttime use. While I personally liked the blue backlighting, it may not appeal to everyone. Asus should’ve at least offered the ability to change colours since most competitors do.

asus gaming v16 review5 AsusGamingV16 Asus

The laptop gets a full-size keyboard with numpad

Additionally, the arrow keys and W, A, S, and D keys have translucent caps, allowing more of the blue light to shine through. The keyboard is nice to type on, has good spacing, and offers 1.7mm of travel.

asus gaming v16 review7 AsusGamingV16 Asus

The large touchpad supports Smart Gestures

It’s uncommon to see a large touchpad on a gaming laptop, but I’m glad that Asus offers one with the Gaming V16. The large ErgoSense touchpad supports multi-touch gestures but also offers Smart gestures that let you adjust brightness, volume, and more. While it doesn’t have a glass coating, the surface is smooth and also features a hydrophobic coating. The clicks are fine, and so is the feedback.

asus gaming v16 review10 AsusGamingV16 Asus

The downward-firing speakers lack bass

You get dual downward-firing speakers on the laptop, and they’re decent. The speakers don’t get very loud, and there’s very little to almost no bass. However, the sound is clear and doesn’t crack even at full volume. When gaming or watching movies, it’s better to use headphones.

asus gaming v16 review6 AsusGamingV16 Asus

The laptop offers a privacy shutter for the webcam

The webcam on the laptop is also nothing to brag about. It’s the usual 1080p camera found in most Windows laptops and does the job. The image is grainy in most lighting conditions. Asus offers a physical privacy shutter, which is nice.

Asus Gaming V16 Software: Basic

  • OS – Windows 11 Home
  • Additional software – MyAsus, ScreenXpert 3.0

The laptop runs Windows 11 Home and has some Asus tools, such as MyAsus and ScreenXpert 3.0. A Copilot key is available on the keyboard, which you can use to access the AI chatbot.

asus gaming v16 review8 AsusGamingV16 Asus

You get access to Microsoft’s Copilot chatbot on the laptop

The MyAsus app lets you customise the laptop to your liking. You can check for hardware problems, troubleshoot, check battery health, change performance/fan profiles, and adjust the display colour. Unfortunately, there are no AI tools such as Microsoft Studio Effects.

Asus Gaming V16 Performance: Mid-range

  • CPU – Up to Intel Core 7 240H
  • RAM – 16GB DDR5
  • Storage – 512 GB PCIe 4.0 SSD storage
  • GPU – Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 6GB VRAM (70W TDP)

Coming to the performance, the Gaming V16 unit we got for review was equipped with the Intel Core 5 210H processor. There’s also a variant with the Intel Core 7 240H chipset. However, the RAM and storage are capped at 16GB of DDR5 and 512GB PCIe 4.0. They’re both expandable, though and while 16GB RAM is good enough to run most tasks, it’s best to upgrade the storage as 512GB will run out in no time if you like to install and play a lot of games.

asus gaming v16 review12 AsusGamingV16 Asus

The GeForce RTX 4050 GPU has a max TDP of 70W

The laptop performs well without much lag when used regularly. However, I did notice some hiccups when running benchmark tools. Talking about benchmarks, I ran a couple of them and below are the results.

Benchmarks Asus Gaming V16
Geekbench Single 2,413
Geekbench Multi 9,349
PCMark 10 6,801
Geekbench AI CPU (ONNX) 3,631 (Quantized)
Geekbench AI DirectML (ONNX) 9,618 (Quantized)
3DMark Steel Nomad 1,557
3DMark Time Spy 7,445

The Asus Gaming V16 performed quite well in the benchmarks, especially when it comes to GPU scores. The GeForce RTX 4050 GPU on the laptop is topped at 70W TDP, which is not the most amount of power, which shows in demanding games. I played the new Indiana Jones and the Great Circle on the laptop, and even with DLSS enabled and graphics set to low/medium, the game only delivered about 30 to 40 fps. However, less demanding titles such as Forza Horizon 4 did perform better on the laptop, delivering over 70 fps.

In terms of heat management, the laptop did a decent job. The dual fans helped to keep most of the heat away from me, but the top part of the keyboard did get hot when playing games and running benchmarks.

Asus Gaming V16 Battery: Impressive

  • Capacity – 63Wh
  • Charger – 150W AC adapter

While the performance didn’t impress, the battery life did. The Intel Core 5 210H chipset is an efficient one, and coupled with the 63Wh battery, you can expect the laptop to last anywhere between 6 to 7 hours and even longer if you just use it for web browsing. That’s not something you’d expect from a gaming laptop.

asus gaming v16 review13 AsusGamingV16 Asus

The laptop comes with a 150W charger

Asus bundles a chunky 150W charger with the laptop that can fully charge the laptop in under 2 hours. You can also charge the laptop using the USB Type-C port, but it’s not as fast.

Asus Gaming V16 Verdict

The Asus Gaming V16 is a good buy for those venturing into the world of gaming, but not if you’re a seasoned gamer. If you’re on a budget and don’t do a lot of gaming, this might be a good option. It’s got a portable design with a decent build, a 16-inch high refresh rate display, a good keyboard, and excellent battery life. And, for those short gaming sessions between study or work, you’ve got the GeForce RTX 4050 GPU. At a starting price of Rs. 82,990, the Gaming V16 should certainly be on your list of budget gaming laptops.

Tested for Durability, Enhanced for Connectivity, Built for Longevity: Why OPPO F29 Series is the Ultimate Durable Champion, Starting Rs. 23,999

When it comes to choosing a smartphone, durability and reliability are often top priorities. You want a device that can handle everyday mishaps, stay connected no matter where you are, and keep up with your daily demands without running out of battery. In the world of smartphones, OPPO has earned its reputation as the most preferred brand for durability, and the F Series stands as a true testament to that. With the recently launched F29 Series, OPPO has once again raised the bar, setting new standards for toughness. Starting at just Rs. 23,999, the F29 and F29 Pro are built to perform perfectly in real-life scenarios, making them OPPO’s most reliable smartphones yet.

wet wet

Durability Tested Like Never Before

OPPO’s new F29 Series is designed with real-life durability in mind, pushing the boundaries of smartphone strength. After rigorous testing conducted by SGS India in Bengaluru, these phones have earned top-notch international certifications, including IP66, IP68, and IP69 ratings. This means they effectively guard against dust, survive immersion in water up to 1.5 meters deep for half an hour, and even powerful, high-temperature water jets.

coffee coffee

Think about the accidents that happen daily, spilled coffee during a busy morning, juice knocked over by kids, or your phone accidentally slipping into a sink full of soapy dishes. Unlike most phones that would immediately fail and stop responding, the OPPO F29 Series stays fully functional, resisting damage from as many as 18 common liquids, including soda, beer, soap water, and even hot springs.

To your surprise, OPPO has thoughtfully equipped a handy One-Click Drainage function that enables you to quickly clear out water from the speaker. Amazing, isn’t it?

oppo pebbel

Built Tough for Real-Life Scenarios

We put the OPPO F29 Series through the kind of chaos any phone would face in everyday life, and it outperformed our expectations.

To test durability, we dropped it from a regular staircase (about 1.5 meters high). It bounced, landed hard, and still powered on without a single crack. The damage free 360 degree Armour body, reinforced corners clearly do their job, and the cushioning inside helps absorb shocks better than you’d expect. The phone’s frame is made from aerospace-grade aluminium alloy (AM04), which is 10% stronger than previous generations. So, we’re not saying go around dropping it, but if it slips out of your pocket while getting out of the car or falls off your desk, it’ll be just fine.

We also made it go through a few messy scenarios that involved keys, coins, and rough tabletops. The front, protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 in F29 Pro, and Corning Gorilla Glass 7i in F29 came out without a scratch. The rear panel, made with high-molecular fiberglass, held up well too. It doesn’t feel like a fragile phone, and that’s a rare thing these days.

The camera bump is usually where a lot of phones get scratched up, but here, the lens protection ring actually made a difference. We kept it face down on rough cafe tables, benches in park, even office floors, and there were no scratches on the lens.

Beyond drops and scratches, we wanted to see how it’d handle extreme environments. So we used it during a hot afternoon out in the Delhi sun, then again on a rainy day with humidity pushing 90%. The F29 Series didn’t heat up, glitch, or struggle at all.

OPPO says it’s passed 14 Military Standard MIL-STD-810H-2022 environmental tests, and honestly, after the week we put it through, we believe it.

Unmatched Connectivity Wherever You Go

Struggling with poor network connectivity is incredibly frustrating, whether you’re deep in rural areas or navigating bustling city streets. To address this, the F29 Series introduces New Hunter Antenna architecture that offers an impressive 300% improvement in signal strength.

OPPO’s exclusive antenna tech covers 84.5% of the device, meaning stronger, more consistent signal, no matter how you hold the phone. It also supports 4×4 MIMO, which basically allows for multiple data streams at once. Think of it like upgrading from a two-lane road to a four-lane highway, uploads, downloads, and video calls feel faster and a lot more stable, even in weak network zones.

There’s also Smart Network Switching that further ensures your phone automatically connects to the strongest signal available, minimising disruptions during important calls, video streaming sessions, or intense gaming moments.

We also tested out OPPO’s AI LinkBoost 2.0, which kicked in especially well when walking into network dead zones like underground parking lots or elevators. The signal didn’t completely drop, calls didn’t cut off, and videos buffered less.

For gamers, the Game-exclusive Wi-Fi Antenna really helps. Holding the phone in landscape mode usually blocks antennas on many devices, but here, we played for nearly an hour and didn’t face any lag.

The F29 Series is also TÜV Rheinland-certified for high network performance, and in our tests, that checked out. We tried making WhatsApp calls, watching YouTube, and uploading photos in signal-challenged areas like old residential buildings and basement cafés. Compared to other phones in the same price range, the F29 Series was always faster.

For those working outdoors, like delivery partners, Outdoor Mode boosts brightness, keeps the screen on longer, and improves performance for apps like Zomato or Swiggy. It even switches to loudspeaker if you’re not using a headset.

And if you’re wearing gloves, Glove Mode lets you use the screen without taking them off. We tried it with wool and cotton gloves, and it worked without fuss.

Powerful Battery That Lasts All Day

Running out of battery is a common stress, but OPPO F29 Series lets you stay worry-free all the time. The F29 Pro comes equipped with an impressive 6000mAh battery which has been designed to maintain same performance for up to five years. Backed by OPPO’s cutting-edge 80W SUPERVOOCTM charging tech, the phone can instantly recharge from 0% to 62% in just 30 minutes and a 100% in approximately 54 minutes, hence making it super ideal for those constantly on the move.

However, the F29 isn’t far behind. It packs a larger 6500mAh battery largest battery ever in F-Series with 45W SUPERVOOCTM charging capability, reaching an 80% charge within roughly one hour and fully charged in just 84 minutes. Also, both variants offer reverse charging, allowing you to easily share battery power with other USB-C compatible devices during those urgent situations.

Capturing Moments Underwater and Beyond

Photography is another key strength of the OPPO F29 Series. With dedicated underwater photography capabilities, you can effortlessly capture stunning pictures and videos underwater at depths of up to 1.5 meters. Whether you’re on vacation or just exploring, this phone lets you capture underwater beauty clearly and vividly.

AI-powered camera features further enhance photography. Tools like AI Livephoto, AI Unblur, AI Reflection Remover, AI Clarity Enhancer, and AI Eraser allow anyone to create professional-quality photos easily. From capturing concerts clearly to removing unwanted reflections from windows, these features make every shot perfect.

 Powerful Performance and Immersive Display

The OPPO F29 Pro comes with the high-performance MediaTek Dimensity 7300 Energy processor, delivering smooth multitasking, lag-free gaming, and efficient battery use. The OPPO F29 sports the reliable Snapdragon 6 Gen 1 processor, ideal for everyday tasks, social media, and moderate gaming, offering a perfect balance between power and efficiency.

Both models feature a stunning 6.7-inch AMOLED display, reaching up to 1200 nits of brightness, great for use in sunlight. The screen refreshes at 120Hz and has 93.5 screen-to-body ratio, making animations silky-smooth, while the built-in stereo speakers offer an immersive audiovisual experience with a 300% Ultra Volume mode.

Stylish, Comfortable Design

Despite their unmatched toughness, the OPPO F29 Series phones are impressively slim and lightweight. The F29 Pro weighs just 180 grams, while the F29 remains around 185 grams, each under 8mm thick, making them easy to hold and carry.

The F29 Pro comes in two striking colours: sophisticated Marble White and sturdy Granite Black, each inspired by natural looks. Meanwhile, the F29 offers stylish choices like Solid Purple and Glacier Blue, ensuring there’s something for everyone.

Smart AI Tools for Productivity

Powered by ColorOS 15, the OPPO F29 Series comes with powerful advanced AI tools to simplify your daily tasks and boost productivity. With features like AI Summary, you can effortlessly get short and simple summaries of long articles. The Screen Translator tool easily breaks down language barriers by translating text in real time. Also, AI Writer helps you craft extremely polished emails and messages, streamlining your everyday communication. The integration of Google Gemini AI ensures you always have intelligent assistance available right on your phone.

Conclusion

The OPPO F29 Series stands out when it comes to toughness, connectivity, battery life, and photography, all without breaking the bank. Carefully designed and rigorously tested with everyday Indian scenarios in mind, the OPPO F29 and F29 Pro deliver exceptional durability and reliability starting at Rs. 23,999. Study Finds grey Seals Can Track Blood Oxygen to Prevent Drowning

Marine mammals rely on oxygen to survive, yet some species stay underwater for long periods without breathing. Scientists at the University of St Andrews wanted to understand how gray seals manage their time underwater without relying on carbon dioxide buildup as a signal. Six adult gray seals were placed in a controlled environment to observe their diving patterns. The seals were only allowed to surface at a designated chamber, where researchers adjusted oxygen and carbon dioxide levels to test their responses.

Research Confirms Oxygen as the Primary Trigger

According to the study published in Science, different air compositions were tested to measure their effect on dive times. The air in the breathing chamber was adjusted across four conditions: normal air, increased oxygen, reduced oxygen, and heightened carbon dioxide levels. When oxygen levels were increased, seals stayed underwater for longer. When oxygen was reduced, they surfaced sooner. Carbon dioxide changes did not alter their behavior, suggesting that oxygen, not carbon dioxide, determines when they come up for air.

Unique Adaptation in Marine Mammals

Researchers says that grey seals have an internal system to track oxygen levels. This allows them to surface before reaching dangerous limits. This ability prevents drowning and may be common among other marine species. Since deep-diving mammals must manage oxygen carefully, similar mechanisms could be present in whales, dolphins and other seals.

Experts Weigh in on the Discovery

Lucy Hawkes from the University of Exeter and Jessica Kendall-Bar from the University of California, San Diego, discussed the study’s impact. They noted that understanding this adaptation sheds light on how marine mammals survive in extreme underwater conditions. Further research could explore how this system works in different species and environments.

New Research Suggests Dark Energy Is Evolving, Challenging Cosmology Models

New research suggests that dark energy, the unknown force driving the accelerated expansion of the universe, may not be behaving as previously believed. Observations from a large-scale 3D map indicate that this force could be evolving over time, contradicting long-standing models of cosmology. The data, derived from extensive observations of millions of galaxies, provides fresh insights into the fundamental workings of the universe. Scientists are now questioning whether the standard model, which assumes a constant dark energy force, remains valid in explaining the cosmos.

Evidence from DESI’s 3D Mapping Project

According to the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI), which operates from the Nicholas U. Mayall 4-Meter Telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory, findings suggest that dark energy may not be a fixed force. The analysis is based on data collected over three years, covering nearly 15 million galaxies and quasars. DESI’s ability to simultaneously capture light from 5,000 galaxies allows researchers to examine large-scale cosmic structures and measure how the universe’s expansion rate has changed over time.

Comparisons with Other Cosmic Observations

As reported, inconsistencies arise when DESI’s findings are compared with measurements from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and type Ia supernovae. The CMB consists of fossil light from the early universe, has been used to track the expansion history of the cosmos. Similar to thaf type Ia supernovae, often called “standard candles” for their uniform brightness, have provided key distance measurements. The DESI data suggests that dark energy’s influence may have weakened over time, a deviation from the accepted cosmological model that assumes it remains unchanged.

Implications for Future Research

Speaking in an official press release, DESI Project Scientist Arjun Dey stated that these findings could redefine humanity’s understanding of the universe. The instrument’s ongoing observations will continue to refine knowledge of dark energy’s role. Scientists anticipate that by the project’s conclusion, further data will offer a clearer picture of whether dark energy fluctuates, potentially reshaping existing theories of cosmic evolution.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Said to Be Series’ Second Biggest Launch Ever

Assassin’s Creed Shadows released last week and had an impressive first weekend as over two million players flocked to the game across PC, PlayStation and Xbox. Ubisoft confirmed Saturday that the action-RPG had surpassed the launches of AC Origins and Odyssey. While the company has not made initial sales figures public yet, two separate reports have claimed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the series’ second biggest launch ever, behind only 2020’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Becomes Series’ Second Biggest Launch

The latest Assassin’s Creed game is said to have generated the second-highest day-one sales revenue for the franchise. The information comes from two separate reports from VGC and IGN that cite Ubisoft sources and an internal email discussing the game’s sales performance. Shadows’ launch-day sales performance is second only to Valhalla in the series, which remains the highest-selling Assassin’s Creed game of all time.

It’s also worth noting that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla arrived at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic when countries across the world had implemented lockdown rules, resulting in more people staying at home and playing video games. The game’s sales also benefitted from a cross-gen release on consoles.

Ubisoft, too, recognises as much; As per IGN’s report, the company considers Valhalla’s exceptional sales performance a result of favourable conditions, and as such, intends to compare Shadows to the launches of AC Origins and Odyssey.

“Valhalla launched under extraordinary conditions — in the middle of a global pandemic, with widespread lockdowns and brand-new console hardware,” the report said, quoting Ubisoft’s internal communications. “It was a perfect storm we may never see again. That’s why it’s more meaningful to compare Shadows to entries like Origins, Odyssey, and Mirage — games released in more typical cycles. And in that frame, Shadows is already setting a new bar as illustrated above.”

Steam Launch Benifits Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Further, the company’s sales data, as reported by both publications, also claims that Assassin’s Creed Shadows is Ubisoft’s best day-one launch on the PlayStation Store. The game has found a sizable player base on PC, as well, especially due to its day-one launch on Steam. According to Ubisoft, 27 percent of the game’s total “activations” came on PC, with Steam playing a “significant role.”

Ubisoft, however, has not yet shared sales figures for Shadows, even though it has cited strong player engagement in its communications, both internal and public. The company said over the weekend that the game had crossed over two million players. This number, however, includes Ubisoft+ members who were able to access the game without buying a copy.

According to SteamDB charts, the Japan-set action-RPG has seen an all-time peak concurrent player count of 64,825 at the time of writing, a number that could rise in the coming days. The sales performance of Assassin’s Creed Shadows should become clearer in time, especially when Ubisoft reports its quarterly financial results.

The French company has been banking on the game to deliver a hit after back-to-back disappointments with the launches of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Star Wars Outlaws. Ubisoft’s stock price has taken a beating over the past year, falling 40 percent in 2024 and pushing the company’s founding Guillemot family to explore talks with Tencent and other investors over a buyout deal.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows released on March 20 after a being delayed twice from its original release date of November 15, 2024. Ubisoft said it utilised the additional development time to further polish the game and incorporate player feedback.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’s PS5 Release Date Will Reportedly Be Announced on March 24

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’s release date on the PS5 will reportedly be announced on Monday. The action-adventure title from Bethesda launched on PC and Xbox Series S/X in December 2024, with a PS5 launch slated for 2025. While Microsoft and Bethesda have not confirmed the release date for the PS5 versions of the game, an industry insider has said an announcement is likely on March 24.

Indiana Jones PS5 Announcement Soon

The information comes from billbil-kun, a reliable leaker with a track record for accurate games industry scoops. According to them, Bethesda will make an announcement on Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’s PS5 release date on March 24.

The leaker also posted box arts for the Standard and Premium editions of the game on X, along with details on pre-order bonuses. As per marketing images shared by billbil-kun, pre-purchasing the Standard Edition will grant players The Last Crusade pack, which includes a Travelling Suit outfit and the Lion Tamer whip. Pre-ordering the Premium Edition, on the other hand, will get players two days of early access, The Order of Giants story DLC, The Last Crusade pack, Temple of Doom outfit and a digital art book.

The leaker’s claim was strengthened by publisher Bethesda; the studio teased an upcoming announcement for Indiana Jones on X Sunday, posting a photo of Troy Baker, who plays Indy in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, along with text that reads, “keep eyes here tomorrow.”

Earlier this month, billbil-kun had claimed that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle would be released on PS5 on April 17, with Premium Edition early access starting April 15. The leaker had also said pre-orders would begin around March 25, with PS5 pricing matching the Xbox Series S/X version of the game.

Indiana Jones’ PS5 launch is likely bring a host of new players to the game. In January, Microsoft confirmed at its second quarter earnings call for FY 2025 that the action-adventure title had reached over four million players. The figure, however, includes players who accessed the title on Game Pass.

Android 16 Developer Preview 3 Reportedly Enables Screen-Off Fingerprint Unlock on All Pixel Phones

Android 16 Developer Preview 3 (DP3) for Pixel smartphones was released last week. It adds a new feature which makes unlocking the phone with the inbuilt fingerprint sensor more convenient, according to a report. The feature is said to allow Pixel users to use the fingerprint unlock sensor even when the screen is turned off. It was first introduced with the Android 16 DP2 update in December but was said to be limited to the Pixel 9 series. The latest update expands the feature all Pixel handsets with an in-display fingerprint scanner.

Unlocking the Pixel on Android 16 DP3

At present, the Pixel’s screen needs to be awake in order for the in-display fingerprint sensor to function. Although there is no direct option to enable it, there are some workarounds, such as turning on the always-on display or using the tap to wake feature. However, this limitation is set to be removed with Android 16.

According to an Android Authority report, the Android 16 DP3 adds a new setting called Screen-off Fingerprint Unlock on all Pixel phones with an in-display fingerprint scanner. The feature’s description states that it can be “toggled to use fingerprint unlock even when the screen is off”. Once enabled, users will be able to tap on the fingerprint reader and it will be illuminated, verifying their biometric credentials and unlocking the phone.

It is reportedly found under Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock > Face & Fingerprint Unlock > Fingerprint Unlock.

The same feature was first introduced in December with the Android 16 DP2 update. However, the publication reports that the latest update expands its availability. It is reported to have been tested successfully on the Google Pixel 6a. While previously it required an ultrasonic under-display fingerprint sensor to work, it remains unknown if this criteria has been removed with the Android 16 DP3 update. Notably, the Google Pixel 9 series are the only Pixel handsets to use an ultrasonic sensor. Meanwhile, previous models up to the Pixel 6 utilised an optical fingerprint reader for biometric authentication.

Google’s Tensor G5 SoC May Use Imagination Technologies’ GPU to Power Pixel 10 Series

Google Pixel 10 series is rumoured to be in development as the successor to last year’s Pixel 9 lineup. Ahead of its anticipated debut, a report suggests that the company may leverage a graphics processing unit (GPU) developed by UK-based Imagination Technologies in the Tensor G5 SoC to power its purported smartphones. It could reportedly use DXT-48-1536 GPU which supports features such as scalable ray tracing, RISC-V firmware, and 2D dual-rate texturing.

Google Pixel 10 Series GPU

According to an Android Authority report, Yang Yanling, a postgraduate student, created a blog post to discuss the RISC-V and integration with Imagination GPU IP following the RISC-V Day Tokyo last month. The initial, unedited version of the text contained information about the processors using Imagination GPUs, with one of them being the in-development Tensor G5.

The GPU developer itself shared the blog post although the text has since been edited to remove any references to the purported chip. However, screenshots suggest that Google could use Imagination Technologies’ DXT-48-1536 GPU. Introduced for premium handsets, this GPU can deliver ray tracing in several configurations and performance points using its ray acceleration cluster (RAC).

It also supports improved graphics performance without reducing the visual quality courtesy of Fragment Shading Rate (FSR). As per the company, it decreases the number of fragments processed, making ray-traced effects more efficient. The GPU is also claimed to have 50 percent more top-end compute and texture performance per SPU (Scalable Processing Unit) compared to the previous generation. All these features are speculated to improve the graphical fidelity of the purported Google Pixel 10 series.

Past reports suggest that the Tensor G5 SoC may come with significant changes related to the always-on compute (AoC) audio processor, the Google Emerald Hill memory coprocessor, the Google GXP (DSP), and the Google EdgeTPU. It is speculated to be fabricated using TSMC’s 3nm process technology instead of Samsung Foundry, delivering performance and efficiency improvements over the Tensor G4 which powers the Pixel 9 series.

WhatsApp Reportedly Working on Support for Motion Photos on Android

WhatsApp is working on adding support for sharing motion photos in chats and channels, according to details shared by a feature tracker. The Meta-owned messaging service could soon introduce a feature that lets users share a brief clip with audio and video recorded by some smartphones when taking a photo. This feature was spotted in development on the latest beta version of the app for Android smartphones, while iPhone users should eventually be able to see them as Live Photos on WhatsApp for iOS.

WhatsApp Motion Photos Picker Button Spotted in Development

According to WABetaInfo, the messaging service is working on adding support for sharing motion pictures in individual chats, group chats, and channels. It was first spotted on the WhatsApp beta for Android 2.25.8.12 update, which is rolling out to beta testers via the Play Store. However, users will not be able to try out the feature, as it is still in development.

Motion photos, a feature supported on Android smartphones, and can be captured via the camera app on select devices. When taking a motion photo (or Top Shot on Pixel phones) the handset records a short video clip and some audio, along with a still image. The iOS equivalent of this feature is known as Live Photos.

The feature tracker was able to enable support for the feature, and a screenshot of the upcoming media picker (currently available to beta testers) shows a new icon located in the top right corner of the pop-up card, next to the HD button.

When enabled, users will be able to send share motion photos with other users from their Android smartphone. These images are currently shared as static images, but an upcoming version of WhatsApp should allow users to share motion pictures (or Live Photos on iOS) in chats or on channels.

While capturing motion photos is only supported on select Android smartphones, WhatsApp will allow recipients t see them on an unsupported handset, according to WABetaInfo. This means that WhatsApp is likely to include support for viewing these images on all Android phones, while iOS users might see them as a Live Photo.

Just like other features that are currently in development, there’s no word on when WhatsApp will roll out this functionality to testers. Once it is ready to test, it should be available to beta testers on Android, before it is rolled out to all users on the stable channel.
