Sony Tipped to be Developing New 200-Megapixel Camera Sensor for Flagship Smartphones

Sony is developing a new, bigger camera sensor that may headline upcoming flagship smartphones, according to claims by a tipster. It is expected to compete against the Samsung ISOCELL HP9, which has been integrated into smartphones such as the Vivo X200 Pro and the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra. The purported Sony camera sensor is tipped to function as a main camera sensor and could be used in flagship smartphones which launch later this year.

Sony’s Upcoming 200-Megapixel Camera Sensor

Tipster Digital Chat Station (translated from Chinese) shared details about the purported Sony camera sensor in a post on the Chinese social media platform Weibo. The Japanese conglomerate is said to have plans of introducing the new sensor with phones powered by upcoming flagship SoCs such as the MediaTek Dimensity 9500 and the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2. Additionally, it may also use it in one of its upcoming smartphones.

It is tipped to have a size bigger than 1/1.3-inch which suggests that it may capture more light than its potential competitor, the Samsung ISOCELL HP9. The latter follows a 1/1.4-inch optical format. At present, the Vivo X200 Pro uses the Samsung sensor as a telephoto lens while the company’s own flagship Galaxy S25 Ultra has it as the primary camera sensor.

With the development of this sensor, many original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) could finally provide an upgrade over the 50-megapixel sensor seen in several high-end smartphones recently.

However, the other details about the purported Sony sensor are yet to be revealed. Notably, the Samsung sensor promises in-sensor zoom up to 4x while maintaining the detail in photos. As per Samsung, it has end-to-end AI Remosaic which enables faster processing times, better details and colour reproduction, as well as quick shutter speed. The sensor gets hardware-independent Single Frame HDR to boost the overall HDR quality.

James Webb Space Telescope Captures Hourglass Nebula LBN 483 in Stunning Detail

A striking nebula shaped by the dynamic interactions of two young stars has been observed in unprecedented detail by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The structure, identified as Lynds 483 (LBN 483), is located approximately 650 light-years away. The nebula’s intricate shape is a result of powerful outflows generated by the formation of a binary star system. As material from a collapsing molecular cloud feeds these stars, bursts of gas and dust are expelled, shaping the surrounding nebulosity into a striking hourglass-like formation. The interaction of these stellar winds and jets with surrounding matter continues to sculpt the nebula over time, providing valuable insight into the mechanisms of star formation.

Star Formation and Nebular Evolution

According to reports, the two protostars at the core of LBN 483 play a crucial role in shaping the nebula. The presence of a lower-mass companion star, identified in 2022 through observations by the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA), suggests complex interactions within the system. Material accreted onto the stars periodically fuels energetic outflows, which in turn crash into the surrounding gas and dust. The JWST’s infrared imaging has revealed intricate structures within these lobes, including dense pillars and shock fronts where ejected material meets older expelled gas.

Impact of Magnetic Fields on Nebular Shape

Radio observations from ALMA have detected polarised emissions from cold dust within the nebula. These emissions indicate the presence of a magnetic field, which influences the direction and structure of the outflows. The study highlights a distinct 45-degree kink in the field at a distance of approximately 1,000 astronomical units from the stars. This deviation is attributed to the migration of the secondary star over time, altering the system’s angular momentum and consequently shaping the nebular outflows.

Implications for Star Formation Studies

LBN 483 presents a unique opportunity for astronomers to study star formation outside of massive stellar nurseries such as the Orion Nebula. The nebula’s isolation allows researchers to examine the formation process without interference from external stellar activity. Findings from this study contribute to refining theoretical models of star formation by integrating real observational data into numerical simulations. Scientists continue to analyse such systems to gain a deeper understanding of how stars, including the Sun, evolved from collapsing clouds of gas billions of years ago.

Ripple Signals Intent to Launch Wallet Service in New Trademark Filing: Reports

Ripple Labs is reportedly looking to expand its custody services with a digital wallet offering. In February, the XRP issuer filed a trademark application titled “Ripple Custody,” seeking approval for “downloadable software” for crypto custody—potentially hinting at a wallet service. The application also indicates Ripple’s intent to store and manage both cryptocurrencies and fiat currencies as part of its financial services

In 2024, Ripple introduced a crypto custody service for banks and fintech firms but has yet to offer a wallet service. Instead, its ecosystem members rely on third-party wallets like Ledger and Trust Wallet for token storage and transactions. This has led to reports speculating that Ripple’s recent trademark filing aims to prioritise a wallet service.

For now, Ripple has neither confirmed nor denied plans for a crypto wallet.

Cryptocurrency wallets, whether hardware-based or app-based, enable users to create accounts and store their digital assets. Access to these wallets is secured through private keys, which can be stored either within the wallet platform or by the users themselves. As per a report by Research and Markets, the crypto wallet market grew from $7.52 billion (roughly Rs. 65,098 crore) in 2023 to $9.25 billion (roughly Rs. 80,068 crore) in 2024. It is estimated to reach $32.75 billion (roughly Rs. 2,83,486 crore) by 2030, with a CAGR of 23.39 percent.

With a surge of wallet apps flooding the crypto market, Ripple has been working to educate its community on trusted options. In December, the company published a blog outlining various types of crypto wallets and listing those supporting its stablecoin, RLUSD. Through this blog, Ripple emphasised four key factors users should consider when choosing a wallet service — private key ownership, security, privacy, and user experience.

If Ripple launches a crypto wallet, it could provide greater support to its community while generating transaction fee revenue for the company, a CoinTelegraph report noted.

Ripple’s crypto custody service for banks and fintech firms, also called Ripple Custody, was launched last October, offering bank-grade custody solutions to fintech and crypto businesses. For now, it appears that a potential wallet service could be introduced under the Ripple Custody brand. However, an official confirmation from Ripple is still awaited.

Meanwhile, the San Francisco-based company continues expanding its global footprint. This month, it secured a licence to provide crypto services to businesses and financial institutions in the UAE.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Series Reportedly Get LOG Video Recording With Latest One UI 7 Beta Update

Samsung recently rolled out the latest One UI 7 Beta update for the Galaxy S24 series and it brings a new way to record videos, as per a report. The new iteration of the Android 15-based operating system (OS) is said to enable support for capturing LOG (logarithmic footage) videos on the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra. As per the South Korean technology conglomerate, this allows users to record a wider dynamic range where the luminance of both very dark and very bright areas is captured by the camera sensor.

Additionally, the One UI 7 Beta 5 update is also said to fixe issues related to Now Bar, lock screen, Notification History, and more.

Support for LOG on Samsung Galaxy S24 Series

According to a SammyFans report, all three Galaxy S24 series models — the base model, Plus variant, and the Galaxy S24 Ultra, now get support for LOG video capture with the latest One UI 7 Beta 5 update. This feature was first reported in the One UI 7 Beta 4 update but was only said to be available on the Ultra model from last year.

Samsung says this video recording format retains more image data compared to standard filming, allowing greater flexibility during post-production. It is claimed to reduce the production time while also enabling improved options for controlling colours, shadows, highlights, colour tones, and other image data. Samsung LOG offers a 10-bit HEVC codec which is said to enable better accessibility to codec compatibility and storage.

While the company introduced LOG video capture with the Galaxy S25 series in January, it is also rolling out support for older devices, starting with the Galaxy S24 lineup following the release of One UI 7 Beta 5.

Alongside this new feature, the update is reported to contain fixes for several reported issues. Samsung says it fixes an intermittent display error of the Now Bar controller. It also rectifies problems which caused icons to appear small on the Widget Setting screen, operation failure of the Gallery Edit button, and partial Font/Image overlap issues.

Further, the update is reported to improve media playback to display as a real-time notification, Quick action menu spacing, a Notification History operation error fix, along with other system improvements.
