Assassin’s Creed Shadows Said to Be Series’ Second Biggest Launch Ever

Assassin’s Creed Shadows released last week and had an impressive first weekend as over two million players flocked to the game across PC, PlayStation and Xbox. Ubisoft confirmed Saturday that the action-RPG had surpassed the launches of AC Origins and Odyssey. While the company has not made initial sales figures public yet, two separate reports have claimed that Assassin’s Creed Shadows is the series’ second biggest launch ever, behind only 2020’s Assassin’s Creed Valhalla.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows Becomes Series’ Second Biggest Launch

The latest Assassin’s Creed game is said to have generated the second-highest day-one sales revenue for the franchise. The information comes from two separate reports from VGC and IGN that cite Ubisoft sources and an internal email discussing the game’s sales performance. Shadows’ launch-day sales performance is second only to Valhalla in the series, which remains the highest-selling Assassin’s Creed game of all time.

It’s also worth noting that Assassin’s Creed Valhalla arrived at the height of the Covid-19 pandemic when countries across the world had implemented lockdown rules, resulting in more people staying at home and playing video games. The game’s sales also benefitted from a cross-gen release on consoles.

Ubisoft, too, recognises as much; As per IGN’s report, the company considers Valhalla’s exceptional sales performance a result of favourable conditions, and as such, intends to compare Shadows to the launches of AC Origins and Odyssey.

“Valhalla launched under extraordinary conditions — in the middle of a global pandemic, with widespread lockdowns and brand-new console hardware,” the report said, quoting Ubisoft’s internal communications. “It was a perfect storm we may never see again. That’s why it’s more meaningful to compare Shadows to entries like Origins, Odyssey, and Mirage — games released in more typical cycles. And in that frame, Shadows is already setting a new bar as illustrated above.”

Steam Launch Benifits Assassin’s Creed Shadows

Further, the company’s sales data, as reported by both publications, also claims that Assassin’s Creed Shadows is Ubisoft’s best day-one launch on the PlayStation Store. The game has found a sizable player base on PC, as well, especially due to its day-one launch on Steam. According to Ubisoft, 27 percent of the game’s total “activations” came on PC, with Steam playing a “significant role.”

Ubisoft, however, has not yet shared sales figures for Shadows, even though it has cited strong player engagement in its communications, both internal and public. The company said over the weekend that the game had crossed over two million players. This number, however, includes Ubisoft+ members who were able to access the game without buying a copy.

According to SteamDB charts, the Japan-set action-RPG has seen an all-time peak concurrent player count of 64,825 at the time of writing, a number that could rise in the coming days. The sales performance of Assassin’s Creed Shadows should become clearer in time, especially when Ubisoft reports its quarterly financial results.

The French company has been banking on the game to deliver a hit after back-to-back disappointments with the launches of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and Star Wars Outlaws. Ubisoft’s stock price has taken a beating over the past year, falling 40 percent in 2024 and pushing the company’s founding Guillemot family to explore talks with Tencent and other investors over a buyout deal.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows released on March 20 after a being delayed twice from its original release date of November 15, 2024. Ubisoft said it utilised the additional development time to further polish the game and incorporate player feedback.

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’s PS5 Release Date Will Reportedly Be Announced on March 24

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’s release date on the PS5 will reportedly be announced on Monday. The action-adventure title from Bethesda launched on PC and Xbox Series S/X in December 2024, with a PS5 launch slated for 2025. While Microsoft and Bethesda have not confirmed the release date for the PS5 versions of the game, an industry insider has said an announcement is likely on March 24.

Indiana Jones PS5 Announcement Soon

The information comes from billbil-kun, a reliable leaker with a track record for accurate games industry scoops. According to them, Bethesda will make an announcement on Indiana Jones and the Great Circle’s PS5 release date on March 24.

The leaker also posted box arts for the Standard and Premium editions of the game on X, along with details on pre-order bonuses. As per marketing images shared by billbil-kun, pre-purchasing the Standard Edition will grant players The Last Crusade pack, which includes a Travelling Suit outfit and the Lion Tamer whip. Pre-ordering the Premium Edition, on the other hand, will get players two days of early access, The Order of Giants story DLC, The Last Crusade pack, Temple of Doom outfit and a digital art book.

The leaker’s claim was strengthened by publisher Bethesda; the studio teased an upcoming announcement for Indiana Jones on X Sunday, posting a photo of Troy Baker, who plays Indy in Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, along with text that reads, “keep eyes here tomorrow.”

Earlier this month, billbil-kun had claimed that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle would be released on PS5 on April 17, with Premium Edition early access starting April 15. The leaker had also said pre-orders would begin around March 25, with PS5 pricing matching the Xbox Series S/X version of the game.

Indiana Jones’ PS5 launch is likely bring a host of new players to the game. In January, Microsoft confirmed at its second quarter earnings call for FY 2025 that the action-adventure title had reached over four million players. The figure, however, includes players who accessed the title on Game Pass.

Sony Announces Unified Beta Testing Program for PS5 and PC Games, Console Features and More

Sony announced a beta testing program for PS5 and PC games and other PlayStation experiences on Tuesday. The initiative, dubbed Beta Program at PlayStation, will be a centralised platform for users to register for beta experiences across future PlayStation games, PS5 features, PlayStation app features and more. Registrations for the program are now live, and players can sign up to register their interest in any upcoming PlayStation betas.

Sony Launches New Beta Program

The Beta Program at PlayStation, revealed on the PlayStation Blog Tuesday, will offer a consolidated way for users to express their interest in various future beta experiences. While Sony has held individual beta tests for games and experiences on its platform in the past, the new program will bring a unified hub for beta testers. Users will only be required to register to the program once to receive beta access for games, console features and more.

“The Beta Program at PlayStation will create an easy, centralized place for you to register your interest in a range of future PlayStation betas,” the announcement said. “A single registration for Beta Program at PlayStation will allow you to express interest in gaining beta access to test participating games for the PS5 console and PC, new PS5 console features, PlayStation App features, and even user experience features on PlayStation.com.”

Once players sign up to the program, they can choose to participate in a specific beta if they receive an invitation. To register for the new beta program, players must have a valid PlayStation Network (PSN) account, live in a supported region and meet region-specific age requirements.

The Beta Program at PlayStation kicked off Tuesday and is free to join for eligible users. Interested players can sign up at playstation.com/beta-program-at-playstation/. It’s worth noting that just signing up for beta testing doesn’t guarantee an invite for a specific beta because of the sheer volume of players.

Nintendo Switch 2 Will Reportedly Be Revealed This Week

The successor to the Nintendo Switch will be revealed this week, an industry insider has claimed. Rumours and leaks about the Nintendo Switch 2 have intensified ahead of launch, with several sources claiming an official announcement on the hybrid console could be right around the corner. Nintendo is said to be ready to unveil the Switch 2 as soon as January 16.

Nintendo Switch 2 Reveal Imminent

The information comes from tipster Nate the Hate, known for industry scoops and accurate predictions about launches. In the latest edition of his podcast Monday, he claimed he had been told the Nintendo Switch 2 would be revealed on Thursday, January 16.

He also shared a few details about the possible reveal event, claiming he had partial knowledge of what one could expect from Nintendo. “What I’ve heard is that the reveal itself is going to focus almost exclusively on the console itself,” the tipster said. “There is not going to be any presence of games.”

Nate the Hate’s claims were backed by other publications, as well. The Verge’s Tom Warren said on X Monday that the Switch 2 would be revealed this week. A Eurogamer report, too, claimed that industry sources had pointed to a January 16 reveal for Nintendo’s next console.

Nintendo Switch 2 Leaks

The string of leaks — many of which have shed light on the expected design of the Switch 2, while some have shared its specifications and capabilities — in recent weeks suggest that Nintendo might be close to finally taking the covers off the successor to the phenomenally successful Switch.

In fact, at CES last week, Genki, a third-party peripheral maker, presented a mockup of the Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo, meanwhile, has remained tightlipped amid the leaks, and has even sought to clamp down on them. In a statement to CNET last week, the company said the Genki mockup of the Switch 2 shown at CES was “unofficial” and was not provided to the seller by Nintendo.

On its part, Nintendo has only confirmed two things: first, that the successor to the Nintendo Switch will be announced before the end of March 2025; and second, the console will be backwards compatible with Nintendo Switch games.

Over the past few months, however, Switch 2 leaks have pointed towards design and hardware upgrades — magnetic Joy Cons with hall-effect joysticks, a more powerful dock, larger display and more. A report last month claimed the Switch 2 would be launched on March 28.

Patent Suggests Nintendo Working on DLSS-Style AI Upscaling Technology Ahead of Nintendo Switch 2 Launch

A patent filed by Nintendo in the United States in July 2023 suggests the company has been working on an image upscaling technology, similar to Nvidia’s DLSS. The US patent, published Tuesday, details a computer technology for “converting images through the use of trained neural network,” where a source image is enhanced with contextual data. Nintendo’s patent suggests the successor to the Nintendo Switch could come with AI upscaling technology, resulting in better image quality in games. The Nintendo Switch 2 has previously been rumoured to support a DLSS-style upscaling feature.

Nintendo Patent for AI Upscaling Feature

The patent, as spotted by VGC, says the technology will utilise machine learning techniques to up-convert images from one resolution to a higher resolution.

“A source image is divided into blocks and context data is added to each pixel block. The context blocks are split into channels and each channel from the same context block is added to the same activation matrix. The action matrix is then executed against a trained neural network to produce a changed activation matrix. The changed activation matrix is then used to generate a converted image,” the abstract of the patent reads.

Nvidia’s DLSS (deep learning super sampling) utilises AI upscaling technology to improve image quality in video games, producing better image resolution and higher framerates. Most modern PC games support upscaling techniques like Nvidia’s DLSS, AMD’s FSR and Intel’s XeSS for better performance on older hardware.

AI upscaling technology is also making its way to gaming consoles. The recently launched PlayStation 5 Pro comes with PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), Sony’s new AI upscaling feature that uses machine learning-based technology to add more detail to the image.

The timing of the patent suggests Nintendo could be readying its own AI upscaling feature for the Nintendo Switch 2, set to launch this year. Previous reports, too, have claimed that the Switch 2 will utilise a DLSS-style technology to improve performance.

The Nintendo Switch 2 will launch before the end of March, Nintendo has said. The company has also confirmed the hybrid console will be backwards compatible with Switch games. A recent report claimed the Switch 2 would launch on March 28.

Astro Bot, Balatro, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown and More: Gadgets 360’s Best Games of 2024

This year was supposed to be a slow year for games, a gap year for major releases before 2025 brought out the big guns. But in hindsight, 2024 has been a bountiful year for video games, with some standout titles on all platforms. From Helldivers 2 and Palworld becoming multiplayer phenomenons, to Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree and Black Myth: Wukong lighting up the action-RPG category, past 12 months have seen excellent launches across genres.

It’s been a great year for indie games, too. Balatro, a poker-inspired roguelike deckbuilder developer by a single person, was nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2024. There were some excellent remakes of older games, as well. Silent Hill 2 and Persona 3 Reload brought back classic games in a contemporary package. There were many great games this year, and since 2024 is winding down, it’s time to pick our favourites.

It’s also worth noting that there were several acclaimed titles that we didn’t get to play this year and are hence not part of this list. These include games like Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Metaphor: ReFantazio and more. Our list consists of our favourite picks from the games we did play in 2024. So here are our best video games of 2024 across all platforms (in alphabetical order):

Astro Bot

Sony didn’t have any major first-party launches this year, but a few surprise exclusives helped tide the PlayStation parent over during the period. The best of them all came from the most unexpected place. Team Asobi’s Astro Bot, a sequel to free-to-play PS5 title Astro’s Playroom, arrived like a splash of colour on a dull page. The Nintendo-style family-friendly 3D platformer stands distinct from other PlayStation exclusives in both the way it looks and plays. You play as Astro, the cute robot mascot for PlayStation, faring across the galaxy with his bot buddies, before Nebulax intercepts your PS5-shaped spaceship. The ship crash lands on a strange planet and the bots are scattered and lost across several galaxies.

You’re then tasked with collecting all your friends and repairing your ship by finding the missing parts, as you explore over 80 vibrant levels across multiple galaxies. There’s easter eggs to be found, special VIP bots to be collected and hidden planets to be discovered. Astro Bot is brimming with PlayStation memorabilia, essentially acting as a museum for the brand and its journey through the ages.

Aside from being a fun collectathon, Astro Bot features colouful levels, each with a distinct theme and flavour. There is a planet made out of confections, another that’s designed as a construction site, and one that’s a tropical beach paradise. Moving around in these levels using Astro’s modest move set is fun and responsive, especially with the excellent haptic feedback on the DualSense controller. The gameplay doesn’t feature the depth of some of the other games on this list, but a wide variety of inventive abilities adds freshness to each planet.

With its candy-coloured visuals, creative level design and fun-focussed gameplay, Astro Bot stood out in a year full of excellent action-adventure games, winning four trophies at The Game Awards 2024, including Game of the Year.

Astro Bot Review: Team Asobi’s Nintendo-Style Platformer Is an Instant PS5 Classic

Animal Well

Developed by one person, Billy Blasso, Animal Well is an atmospheric Metroidvania platformer that emphasises exploration. There are no tutorials or hints that guide the player through the expanding maze and there is no combat. Players are instead encouraged to be curious and engage with the game’s challenges creatively.

Animal Well puts the spotlight on its puzzles as each section of the map requires inventive thinking to progress through. The labyrinthine levels are full of eerie animals that sometimes help the player and other times stand in their way. The game can be disorienting at first, with multiple branching paths and no clear way through. Early sections of the game can feel like you are stumbling around in the dark with arms outstretched, trying to feel your way through. But then your eyes get accustomed to the darkness, and you begin to see the path forward.

While you can stick to the golden path in your playthrough and rush through the main objectives, inquisitive players will find hidden areas and increasingly complex puzzles. Gear items found during the playthrough also become key to unlocking the maze. And beyond its rewarding platforming and puzzle solving, Animal Well’s dreamlike visuals and pixel art style bring a surreal, immersive experience that you couldn’t find in any other game released in 2024.

Balatro

At this point, there’s little to be said about Balatro that hasn’t already been said. The indie roguelike deckbuilder, also developed by a single person who goes by the psuedonym LocalThunk, became the year’s breakout hit on every platform. The game has sold over 3.5 million copies and it’s easy to see why. Balatro is deceptively simple, increasingly complex and ridiculously addictive. The goal of the game is to play the best poker hands to defeat blinds — Small, Big and Boss blinds, that escalate difficulty by introducing new challenges.

Each blind includes several rounds of playing your hands until you run out of them or hit the target score. You also get access to special cards that come with buffs to tilt the round in your favour by twisting the rules. As the name would suggest, Joker cards are all-important in Balatro. They come with unique effects that alter rules and consequently can help you hit the score.

Balatro received five nominations at The Game Awards 2024, including Game of the Year. It ended up winning Best Independent Game, Best Debut Indie Game, and Best Mobile Game categories. It’s available on PC, PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch and mobile platforms, and via Apple Arcade subscription. But be warned, downloading Balatro on your phone comes with a risk of getting addicted to its loop.

Helldivers 2

Who knew shooting some bugs with your friends could be this fun? Helldivers 2 arrived in a saturated multiplayer market, with new live service games struggling to hold on to players. But with its frenetic PvE action, its distinct humour, and excellent visuals, Helldivers 2 has managed to stand out in a field full of imitations and iterations. In Arrowhead Games’ third-person shooter, you’re recruited as mindless soldier for the fascistic government of Super Earth and thrown into an endless war against Terminids and Automatons. Your aim as a foot soldier for the empire is to listen to orders, kill the targets, and die in service of Super Earth. But instead of playing the militaristic intent and jingoism straight, the game is dripping with biting satire, paying homage to Starship Troopers. Helldivers 2 is constantly making fun of its own premise, bringing a sense of comedic self-awareness that lends itself to the exaggerated objectives.

There’s no PvP element to Helldivers 2, and so its PvE battleground lends itself perfectly to collaborative and rallying online matches, even if you’re playing with strangers. The action itself is quite epic. You land on overrun outposts on far-flung planets to find them crawling with giant bugs. While you take out the scurrying insects and blow up their nests, you also must complete a set of objectives to gain maximum rewards before you fly out.

To aid your extermination efforts, you get some of the most explosive weapons you’ll see in video games. While your start out with standard assault weapons and can call in special weaponry later through your stratagems, your biggest arsenal are the orbital strikes. These strikes are capable of levelling everything that’s in front you in over-the-top fashion and serve as blockbuster moments in fast-paced matches.

Helldivers 2 Review: Democracy Done Right

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown

Prince of Persia is a beloved and storied franchise that had been dormant for a while before Ubisoft Montpellier, makers of the excellent Rayman games, decided to give the series a new direction. The Lost Crown reinvents Prince of Persia as a Metroidvania action-platformer with intense boss fights, intricate level design and tons of puzzles. In The Lost Crown, you play as Sargon, a member of The Immortals, tasked with rescuing the prince, who has been kidnapped and taken to Mount Qaf.

The mountain becomes the maze where the game’s branching levels rest. As you explore different parts of Mount Qaf, you meet its residents and villains, you discover its hidden secrets and find buried treasures. Along your way, you take on threats in the form of your environment and the enemies that stand in your path. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown features some of the hardest platforming sections in a game this year that demand precision and patience from players.

And its dynamic combat, that emphasises parrying incoming strikes and hitting back during the right window, keeps escalating the difficulty on a steady curve. The Lost Crown, thus, feels challenging, but never unfair. There are some sections that could end up grinding you down, but the developers ensured these areas remain optional. There have been a few excellent Metroidvanias in the past few years and The Lost Crown borrows bright ideas from each of them but ultimately presents an adventure that remains distinctly Prince of Persia.

Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown Review: A Bold New Path for the Prince

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II

We’ve talked about platformers, deckbuilders, action titles and shooters. Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II is an action-adventure game, but it’s also uncompromisingly focussed on a cinematic vision. The game can only be played in a wide-screen aspect ratio, it features beautiful, near photo-realistic visuals and it is powered by a central performance that can rival some of the best ones in films this year.

As a video game, Senua’s Saga isn’t offering a lot; It can be finished in about six hours and its gameplay systems are purposely shallow. But the game packs an unsparing amount of detail and care into its narrative and visual presentation, resulting in an immersive experience like no other in the medium in 2024. From its binaural audio that attempts to capture Senua’s psychosis in an authentic way to its industry leading facial animations, Senua’s Saga is a technical powerhouse.

Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II Review: Ninja Theory’s Flawed, but Uncompromising Sequel Is a Cinematic Achievement

The game utilises Unreal Engine 5 to present natural landscapes that are evocative. Walking through desolate and jagged hills and Norse ruins helps sell a sense of isolation, reflecting Senua’s state. And her determined march forward is reflected in the game’s strictly linear levels. There are action-adventure titles that tell an affecting story while bringing a deeper gameplay experience, where players get to define their time with the game in their own ways. But Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II aims to create a singular experience that obsessively adheres to the developer’s intensions. And that is an admirable approach in a medium that’s ever ready to bend to the will of the player.
