WhatsApp Wins Ruling Against NSO Group as US Court Finds It Liable for Pegasus Spyware Hack

WhatsApp claimed a legal win over the NSO Group, the makers of the Pegasus spyware, on Friday. A US District Court judge ruled in favour of the Meta-owned platform and found that the Israeli company is liable for hacking 1,400 individuals’ devices and infecting them with spyware via the instant messaging platform’s servers. The judge also found the company in violation of the federal US hacking laws as well as those of the State of California. Additionally, NSO Group was also held liable for breaching WhatsApp’s terms of service.

WhatsApp Wins Lawsuit Against NSO Group

The US District Court Judge Phyllis Hamilton, in the ruling, granted WhatsApp’s motion for summary judgment against NSGO group and found that the Israeli company violated the federal Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) and the State of California’s Comprehensive Computer Data Access and Fraud Act (CDAFA).

A separate trial will be held in March 2025 to ascertain the damages NSO Group owes WhatsApp. Hamilton also asked both parties to notify the court by January 17, 2025, if any expert-related motions need to be resolved before the trial on damages.

Will Cathcart, the Head of WhatsApp, called the ruling “a huge win for privacy” in a post on Threads. “We spent five years presenting our case because we firmly believe that spyware companies could not hide behind immunity or avoid accountability for their unlawful actions. Surveillance companies should be on notice that illegal spying will not be tolerated,” he added.

The ruling on the Meta-filed lawsuit comes nearly two years after the US Supreme Court permitted WhatsApp to pursue the lawsuit accusing the NSO group of exploiting a bug in the messaging app to install the Pegasus spyware. The company had claimed that the spyware was installed in an unauthorised manner and was used for the surveillance of 1,400 people including journalists, politicians, and human rights activists.

During the Friday ruling, Hamilton highlighted that the NSO Group repeatedly failed to provide WhatsApp with the source code of its spyware. This was one of the main reasons behind granting the messaging platform’s request for sanctions. Notably, the Israeli firm only showed the source code of the Pegasus spyware to one Israeli citizen within the country. The Judge called the move “simply impracticable”.

WhatsApp first filed a lawsuit against the Israeli company in 2019 seeking an injunction and damages. At the time, NSO Group had argued that the intended usage of Pegasus was to help catch terrorists and hardened criminals and it was aimed at helping law enforcement and intelligence agencies fight crime and protect national security.

WhatsApp Message Reminders Rolling Out to Beta Testers on Android

WhatsApp has started rolling out a new feature to beta testers that could make it easier to keep track of messages received on the app. The reminders feature that informs users about missed status updates has been updated with the ability to receive reminders for messages, on the latest beta version of the app for Android. The feature is designed in such a way that WhatsApp will only notify users about updates and messages from prioritised contacts, according to a feature tracker.

WhatsApp Message Reminders Rely on Internal Algorithm

After updating to WhatsApp beta for Android 2.24.25.29 (via feature tracker WABetaInfo), the description for the feature seen under Settings > Notifications > Reminders has been updated to state that the app will provide occasional reminders for messages, in addition to status updates. Gadgets 360 was unable to access the feature even after installing the latest beta version, which suggests that it is slowly rolling out to testers.

Once the feature is turned on, users will see notifications about messages that they might not have seen on the app. WhatsApp has yet to provide any information related to how the feature works, or whether it will show reminders for unseen messages and status updates for all contacts.

According to the feature tracker, the Reminders feature will inform users about unseen messages from specific contacts, and these will be selected based on interactions in the app. The reminders will reportedly be based on an algorithm that runs on the user’s phone, so a fresh installation of WhatsApp will generate the list of contacts a user has been in touch with again.

It appears that the feature was designed to send out reminders for select conversations in order to prevent the app from inundating users with status updates and messages from all of their contacts. This feature is expected to roll out to more beta testers in the coming days, and could eventually be made available to all WhatsApp users at a later date.

Nothing Rolls Out Community Widgets App, Brings Nokia’s Classic Snake Game to Its Smartphones

Nothing has introduced a new app called Nothing Community Widgets. As the name suggests, it features widgets such as games and tools for Nothing smartphones co-developed by its passionate user base. One of the first arrivals on the app is a snake game which pays homage to the classic snake experience on Nokia phones. It is exclusively available for Nothing smartphones such as the Nothing Phone 2a Plus and the Nothing Phone 2.

As per the British smartphone manufacturer, the idea for the Snake widget was proposed by Nothing community member Rahul Janardhanan in January. Instead of developing it in-house, the brand reached out to community developer Thomas Legendre who previously worked on Ear (web) and the Simone Glyph Game.

The Snake game can be placed on the home screen like any other widget. Similar to the retro Nokia game, the goal is to eat the red dots to make the snake grow longer in size while avoiding collision with itself. Each dot adds a point and its speed increases. The game ends if the snake collides with its body. However, the controls are vastly different. Instead of using the directional keypad buttons like it was required on Nokia phones, users can control the snake with swipe gestures.

Nothing says it aims to bring quality widgets created by the community and bundle them with its Community Widgets app which is hosted on the Google Play Store. Nothing community members can share concepts with the company and its software team will determine if it can be turned into a widget.

This move is part of the company’s ambitions to work with its community. Notably, the brand recently unveiled the Nothing Phone 2a Plus Community Edition, bringing a culmination of the Community Edition Project which began in March this year. It has been co-developed with the Nothing community at all stages — from hardware design, and wallpaper design to packaging design, and marketing campaign. The smartphone features a glow-in-the-dark design with a green phosphorescent material coating at the back.

Uber One Subscription With Cashback Credits and Complimentary Zomato Gold Plan Launched in India

Uber One subscription has been launched in India. The loyalty programme targets frequent users of the ride-hailing platform by offering benefits such as Uber One credits as cashback, top-rated drivers on eligible rides, priority support for members, and a complimentary subscription to a food delivery platform. Notably, the Uber One subscription has already been available in the US and Canada for some time, and India has become the latest country where it has been introduced.

Uber One Subscription Price

Uber One subscription price in India starts at Rs. 149 per month. However, it is currently offering a limited-time first-month discount of up to 80 percent which brings its price down to just Rs. 29.80.

Uber One First Month Discount

Users can choose from monthly, quarterly, and yearly subscription plans. However, the Uber app only shows the monthly and yearly plans as of now, with the latter priced at Rs. 1,499 per year. The company says users can save up to 16 percent each year by availing of the 12-month subscription instead of a monthly plan.

Uber One Benefits

According to the ride-hailing platform, Uber One subscribers can earn 10 percent Uber One credits on Uber Go, Go Sedan, Premier, XL, Reserve, Black, Auto, Moto, and Package bookings. Shuttle users can earn as much as 35 percent in credits, while Intercity and Rentals will earn them 1 percent Uber One credits. These can be redeemed on all rides booked through the app.

But there are a few caveats. The credits are restricted to Rs. 150 per trip and also to 150 rides for the monthly and quarterly plans. The limit extends to 600 trips for yearly subscribers. Uber says credits will expire after 60 days from the date of issuance and will not apply to the portion of payment made with Uber One credits. Further, users will be required to have an active Uber One subscription to make use of their accumulated credits.

Other benefits include top-rated drivers on select rides, based on their availability and round-the-clock support for members.

Additionally, the ride-hailing app is bundling a free 3-month subscription to Zomato Gold for Uber One subscribers. It will be delivered via a voucher code to the user’s email three working days post the subscription’s purchase.

Android’s New Feature Will Automatically Log Users Back Into Apps When Switching Devices

Google has announced a new feature for Android which aims to make the process of switching to and setting up new devices a quicker and more efficient experience. The feature, called Restore Credentials, can automatically log users back into apps on devices once the switchover is complete, leveraging a restore key. It has been introduced as part of Android’s Credential Manager API and works with both cloud and local restore options on Android devices.

Restore Credentials Feature on Android

Google detailed its new Restore Credentials feature in a blog post. The Mountain View-based technology giant highlighted that it is tied to the backup and restore mechanism of the Android system. Even when signed in on the new device, users will continue to be able to access all of their apps and receive notifications on their old devices as well.

It uses a public key which is compatible with passkey and FIDO2 backends and makes use of the passkey server-side infrastructure. As per the company, users will be silently logged in after data restoration is complete if there is a backup agent integration. In case there is none, the app will carry out a search for the restore key upon the first launch and then automatically sign the user in.

How Android’s New Restore Credentials Feature Works

The developer can create a restore key for the user which is saved locally. It can also get saved in the cloud if the user backs up their device and end-to-end encryption is available. Once the data restore process is commenced, the app data, along with the restore key is also copied over to the new device, either through the cloud or local transfer. It then automatically signs in the user on the new device. Google says this entire process does not require any user input.

Google advises developers to delete the restore key as soon as the user signs out to avoid the cycle of signing out intentionally and automatically getting logged back in. They can create, obtain, and clear restore credentials using the Jetpack Credential Manager.

Google Launches Gemini for iOS App With Gemini Live Capability, More

Google has rolled out the Gemini app for iOS users globally, days after being reportedly spotted in a test run in select regions. It enables users to generate images using its multi-modal capabilities, find information across apps like Gmail and YouTube, or enable problem-solving via image queries. The iOS app also carries Gemini Live — Google’s two-way voice chat feature for its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot that lets both the user and the AI converse via speech.

Gemini Live on iOS

Google detailed the introduction of the dedicated Gemini for iOS app in a blog post. The Mountain View-based technology giant says it has been rolled out to provide a more streamlined experience to iPhone users. The app is available free of cost on the App Store and is claimed to enable easy access to features that “help improve learning, creativity and productivity.” It is powered by the Gemini family of large language models (LLMs), including Gemini 1.5.

Gemini for iOS App on the App Store

Gadgets 360 staff members were able to verify its availability on the App Store.

One of its most notable features is Gemini Live. Introduced at the Google I/O event in August, it lets users converse with the AI chatbot via speech. They can choose between 10 different voices to personalise it, with each offering slightly different tonality, pitch, and accent. Gemini Live on the iOS app appears as a waveform icon with the sparkle icon at the bottom-right corner, next to the microphone and camera icons. The company says this feature is meant for chatting, finding answers, or brainstorming ideas. It is currently available in over 10 languages and support for more will be introduced over the coming months.

Gemini for iOS can also generate images, leveraging Google’s Imagen 3 generative AI model. Further, it can help in solving problems by providing custom, step-by-step guidance, and presenting tailored study plans. Users can get more information from new sources such as Maps and YouTube, or ask the AI chatbot to summarise their PDFs using Extensions on Gemini for iOS. It currently offers extensions such as Google Flights, Hotels, Workspace, YouTube, and YouTube Music.

While Gemini is free of cost on iOS, it also offers Gemini Advanced with a Google One Premium plan which is priced at Rs. 1,950 per month. This brings advanced capabilities with the Gemini 1.5 Pro model, priority access to new features, a one million context window, and Gemini in Docs, Gmail, and other Google apps.

Google’s Quick Share App Now Available for Snapdragon X Elite, Other ARM Devices Running Windows 11

Google has silently rolled out its Quick Share app for ARM-powered devices running Windows 11 or later. Although the app was previously available for Windows-based devices, it did not have support for the ARM architecture and thus, could not run on those devices without significant workarounds. But with its introduction, users can now easily send and receive photos, documents, and more data between nearby Android devices and Windows PCs including the new Snapdragon X Elite laptops.

QuickShare on ARM-Powered Devices

Google highlighted that the new Quick Share app for ARM devices running Windows 11 is available for manual download via the official Android website. Users will now be able to share photos, videos, documents, audio files, or entire folders between Android devices and Windows-based desktops and PCs.

They can choose whether to keep control over the device’s visibility to themselves or share it with a friend or everyone. All Quick Share transfers are claimed to have end-to-end encryption for protecting user privacy. The Mountain View-based tech giant says Quick Share already comes built-in on devices running Android 6 or later, and the app only needs to be downloaded on Windows.

Google says Quick Share is now available to users. The Android website’s FAQ section about the requirements for running the app confirms that ARM devices are now supported. However, tipster Mishaal Rahman claims that despite bringing support for ARM, Quick Share is still not ARM64-native and can only be run via emulation.

Notably, this development comes after Google rolled out a new update for Quick Share on the Windows platform last month that did not bundle any new features but brought bug fixes for several issues that plagued users in recent weeks, including those related to Wi-Fi LAN advertising, Wi-Fi Hotspot, Quick Share shortcut icon, system configuration preferences, and app crashing. The fixes were introduced with the Quick Share app version 1.0.2002.2 for Windows.

Apple Said to Test Blood-Sugar App in Sign of Its Health Ambitions

Apple
Inc

seeking
to

tested
an

this

according
to
people
with

The

Though
Apple
doesn’t

plans
to
release
the
app,
the
company
may
eventually
integrate
the
technology
into
future
health
products,
including
a
noninvasive
glucose
tracker
that
it’s
been
developing
for
more
than
a
decade.

The
employees
involved
in
the
test
needed
to
validate
that
they
were
prediabetic
with
a
blood
test.
That
means
they
don’t
currently
have
diabetes
but
may
be
at

of
developing
the
Type

of
the

As
part
of
the

their
blood

via
various

the

then

The
idea
behind
the
system
is
to
show
consumers
how
certain
foods
can
affect
blood

with
the
hope
of
inspiring
changes
that
could
ward
off
diabetes.
For
instance,
if

that
they

and
that
their

they
could
be

The
study
was
intended
to
explore
the
possible
uses
for

and
what

the
company
could
potentially
create
for
consumers.
For
now,
though,

that
glucose

in
the

The
research
could
also
lead
to

deeply
into
its
offerings.

The
research
wasn’t
directly
tied
to
Apple’s
longstanding
effort
to

monitor,
but
it
could
ultimately
help
inform
how
the
company

of

The
idea
is
to

a
person’s

the
skin

a
potentially
groundbreaking
advance
in
the
fight
against
diabetes.

Apple

and
employees
required
specific
vetting
from
managers
before
they
could
partake
in
the
program.
Several
medical
and
nondisclosure
agreements
were
also
required
to
participate.

Today,
glucose-testing
systems
typically
require
a
blood
sample,
often
through
a
finger
prick.
There
also
are
small
shoulder-worn

from

they
still

company’s
head
of
silicon
chips.

Last
year,
Bloomberg
News
reported
that
Apple
had
made
headway
on
the
project
and
believed
it
was
finally
on
track
to
eventually
commercialize
the
technology.
But
an
actual
product
is
still
years
away.
Before
the
company
can
shrink
down
the
sensor
enough
to
fit
in
a
smartwatch,
it
is
working
on
an
iPhone-sized
prototype.
And
even
with
that
format,
Apple
has
run
into
challenges
with
miniaturization
and
overheating.

The
system
uses
lasers
to
shoot
light
into
the
skin
and
determine
how
much
glucose
is
in
the
blood.
Though
Apple
hopes
to
eventually
provide
specific
blood-sugar
readings,
the
initial
version
will
likely
be
designed
to
just
notify
users
if
they
may
be
prediabetic.

Apple
is
taking
a
similar
strategy
with
new
sleep
apnea
notifications,
which
can
tell
smartwatch
wearers
if
they
may
have
the
condition.
An
upcoming
hypertension
detection
feature
will
work
in
much
the
same
way.
